THE STORY GOES BACK TO 1970, when I was just 10. As the freezing and withering wind blew itself, the sun was casting a luminescent glow; it was still cold, from the storm last night.
We stood outside of a tall building, my mother looked down at me and my older brother with furrowed eyebrows, she looked at us carefully- trying to look for any flaws in our appearance. when she found none she cleared her throat, "now, I want both of you to behave and do not ruin this for us." She said with her ever so cold expression. Edmund and I nodded our head instantly, not wanting to suffer the wrath of our mother in public- don't get me wrong, she wasn't a bad mother, she just becomes too strict when it comes to our family's honor and respect.
Then something unexpected happened, the eleventh and thirteenth building moved and there stood number twelve. Father held my hand and took us inside where we were addressed by a house-elf who invited us in. A tall lady stood at the end of the hall, she made her way towards us with a kind smile plastered on her face- which I should have known was far from kind. Everything inside the house was dark; from the walls to the furniture.
"Eloise, Cyril" the lady greeted her mother and father with a handshake. "Walburga" mother and father greeted her back.
"Orion and I have been looking forward to this day," said Walburga Black, leading us inside a room where a man sat on a sofa near the hearth with a copy of the Daily Prophet. In spite of all the burning candles and flames, the place remained cold.
The man looked up from the paper and welcomed us inside. I zoned out from the conversation around me as I looked around the dark room.
Two boys were sitting at the corner of the room; one of them looked up while the other continued with his work. Then, I felt a harsh squeeze on my left arm pulling me out of my train of thoughts. I looked up to see my mother glaring at me as she mouthed "focus" I shuddered under her gaze and looked forward only to see Edmund introducing himself confidently with his chest out. I couldn't help but be jealous- jealous of how he carried himself and how confident he was. I looked at my parents and how proud they looked of him. He was their perfect son.
Mr. and Mrs. Black now turned to me, I tried not to squirm under their gaze. I sighed, gathering my confidence and introduced myself. Mrs. Black kept looking, the same way mother looked at us before entering. As the weight of her eyes became too much, I shifted my attention to my shoes, trying to cover my uneasiness. Clearing her throat, she moved her eyes to her husband as she stated "She is rather dull, isn't she?" without waiting for an answer she continued, now looking at my parents "at least it is better than having someone with a sharp tongue." her words stung like a knife digging deeper- tearing me apart.
At the sound of snicker I looked towards the two boys who seemed to be enjoying the conversation too much. I scoffed at them and tried to keep myself calm when I felt a gentle squeeze on my right hand, I turned to see Edmund looking at me as he gave me a small smile to reassure me.
"No, no she is just shy" mother said instantly with a wave of her hand.
Mrs. Black nodded her head in acknowledgment before she turned around to call out for the two boys. One of them, who seemed liked the younger one of the duo stood up instantaneously, while the one who seemed older rolled his eyes before slowly getting up.
She introduced her sons- Sirius and Regulus with a voice full of pride.
"Why don't you go and show them around?" she said looking down at her sons.
I didn't care for looking around. I wanted to leave immediately. But I knew if I asked mother then I would have to face her rage when we got home, so I kept quiet.
"Follow me" said the older boy, who I now knew was Sirius.
I followed after the two brothers and Ed. After 5 minutes I started loosing interest when we finally reached a room which was quite similar to the one in the beginning but less formal.
The four of us sat their in silence for 10 minutes before Sirius cleared his throat, "so, how old are you?" He said looking at me and Ed.
"11. I'm starting Hogwarts this year" Ed replied. Sirius nodded before turning his attention to me.
"10" I replied, and then there was silence.
"what about you?" Ed asked from across the room, picking up the drink and a piece of chocolate which was there before we entered the room.
"10 " Sirius replied.
"8" spoke Regulus for the first time.
There was silence, again. We sat their for a while, Edmund and I shared a few words between ourselves before Edmund started telling Regulus about everything he knew of Hogwarts and the younger Black listened carefully.
Then, I felt the sofa dip beside me, only to notice Sirius looking at me like he had something on his mind.
I looked at him with furrowed eyebrows before he started "so... do you want to know what they are talking about?–Our parents." he said with mischief dripping from his voice, and as tempting as his offer sounded it was more dangerous and if mother and father found out that I was listening to their conversation then it wouldn't end well for me.
"Interesting, but I'm going to go with no." I said declining his offer.
"Oh come on don't be a bore" he whined
"Well, I would rather be a bore than be in trouble" I said making my answer final.
He looked at me annoyed before saying "okay" and muttering something that I couldn't hear.
"So, what house do you want to get sorted into?" He asked after a while, looking curiously at me.
And this was a question that I had always feared to answer. I knew what house I wanted to get into, but would I get into it? No. I didn't have what it took to be a Slytherin, unlike my family, I wasn't as clever as Edmund or ambitious as father or bold like mother. I would be a miracle if I got sorted into Slytherin.
And just to make him forget about his question I did something I never thought I would.
I disregarded my parents rules.
"So, is your offer still up? I said and then instantly he had a mischievous grin plastered on his face.
Who knew that this would be the last decent conversation I would have with Sirius Black.
