“Kris…please tell me what happened!” Jai begged as I was sitting in his lounge-room balling my eyes out. Jai’s mother was sitting on one of the lounges and Jai was next to me, his arms wrapped around me.
“Sweetie…what happened with you face?” Ms Evans asked me. I just continued crying and I shook my head.
“Kris, please, just talk to me. I’m your best friend,” Jai begged.
“Get Reece,” I said between cries. Jai frowned.
“Why Reece?” he asked.
“Who’s Reece?” Ms Evans asked.
“My boyfriend,” I answered. Jai froze.
“You guys are dating?” he asked. “Did he do this to you? If he did, I swear, I’ll kill him,” Jai said angrily. I shook my head.
“No, he didn’t do this. And yes, we are dating. Only just today, though. Just call him on my mobile phone and get him,” I said, handing him my mobile phone. Jai frowned and took my phone.
“Why Reece, though? I’m here and I’m sure I’ll understand what’s happened,” Jai said. I shook my head.
“No, you won’t. Just call Reece, okay!” I shouted. Ms Evans came back from the kitchen and handed me a glass of water. I took a sip but then handed it back to her. She placed it on the coffee table.
“I’m sure I’ll underst-“
“NO! You won’t!” I shouted angrily.
“Kris, I’m your best friend. I’m sure I’ll underst-“
“Have you ever been hit by your father, Jai?” I asked him. Ms Evans and Jai gasped. He gently placed his hand on my arm.
“Your father did this to you?” Jai asked. I looked up at Jai, and then at Ms Evans. I broke into tears.
“Yes,” I said when I finished crying. “They kicked me out, too.”
“Oh sweetie,” Ms Evans said sadly, pulling me into a hug. I winced in pain though. Before I knew it, Jai lifted up my shirt, revealing bruising down my back.
“I’m going to fucking kill him,” Jai said angrily.
“Just call Reece, okay?!” I shouted at him.
He nodded quickly and dialled Reece’s number, holding my phone to his ear. Ms Evans rushed to the kitchen and came back with ice packs wrapped in tea towels. She gently held one on the side of my face, and I had to take off my shirt so she could put the other on my back, moving it from bruise to bruise.
“We should call the police,” Ms Evans softly said. I shook my head quickly.
“No,” I simply said. Ms Evans just nodded; that’s the thing I liked about her. She acknowledged my wishes. Jai came back into the room and handed me my phone.
“Reece said he’ll be here as soon as he can,” Jai said softly. I nodded and winced as Ms Evans placed the ice pack on the bruise over my eye. Jai was instantly next to me. He took the ice pack from his mum, and she used the other ice pack to put on the bruises on my back.
“Why did he do it?” Jai asked.
“I don’t know…I think that they’re both unhappy with who they think I’ve changed to. But I haven’t changed at all; this is the person I’ve been the whole time,” I said.
Jai nodded in understanding and gently moved the ice pack to another bruise on my face. I looked up at his concerned eyes, and he stared into mine. He quickly looked away and focused on holding the ice pack in place.
