I grinned at my reflection in the mirror. I had gone to a hair salon to get my hair cut and dyed on Tuesday afternoon, mainly because my parents had gone out and I most likely won’t be seeing them until Thursday afternoon.

The ugly bruise on the side of my face had already started to go down, but it still hurt when being touched.

“So, how do you like your hair, sweetheart?” the hairdresser asked me. She was a kind young woman that was perhaps twenty-six at the oldest. She was very pretty, had a short brown hair-cut, and piercing blue eyes.

“I love it,” I replied, grinning. And that was the truth.

My hair, which used to be a natural blonde, was now a violet purple. My hair had cut a bit shorter to get rid of the dead ends, and I was given a “rocker style” front fringe that ended at my eyebrows. I loved it. It looked different, but certainly suited me. I preferred this to my last hair-cut.

“I’m glad you do. It really suites you,” the woman said. I smiled and stood up from the chair. “Hey, you know what I could do?” she asked.

“What could you do?”

“I could give you a nose piercing,” she suggested. I turned to the mirror and touched my nose.

“Hey, that would be pretty cool. Yes, please.”

“Wow…” Jai laughed when I went to visit him back from the salon. He couldn’t stop staring at my new hair-cut and nose piercing, which hurt like a bitch to put in.

“So…what do you think?” I asked him.

“I actually like it. But what about your parents?” Jai asked, pulling me down next to him on the sofa.

“I don’t really care what they think anymore,” I said truthfully. I heard the front door open and in walked Jai’s mum.

“Hello, Ms Evans,” I said happily. She ran over to me and pulled me into a tight hug.

“Kris! How are you?” she asked when she pulled away from me. I smiled; Ms Evans had always loved me.

“I’m good thanks, but what about yourself?”

“Oh, things are busy. But they’re going well,” she said. She then must have remembered something, because she said goodbye and quickly ran upstairs.

Jai then lay down on the couch and pulled me in top of him, my head resting on his chest. God, I was tired. I yawned and snuggled into his comfortable chest.

“Kris…what are you doing tomorrow afternoon?” Jai suddenly asked me.

“I’m going to Reece’s place to practice for our performance on Thursday,” I answered. “Why?”

“Oh…I was just thinking that maybe we could go out somewhere. But that’s all right,” Jai said softly.

I smiled and looked up to Jai’s face. “You’re a good best friend, Jai,” I said. He laughed and stroked my now purple hair.

“If I was a crap one, I wouldn’t be here.”

“Wow, Kris!” Reece exclaimed when he saw me at school the next day. People were staring, some were snickering, and some were whispering.

“Do you like it?” I asked him. He smiled and nodded as he brought me into a tight hug.
