———————————

You hated keeping secrets from Fred. Especially if those secrets would evidently lead to a life-altering series of events.

You wanted to keep him safe, to keep yourself and your family safe, and you couldn't find a way to do that if you stuck around Fred.

He could tell something was off. You'd often spend hours reading the Daily Prophet or even The Quibbler where you'd circle names and the latest Ministry rules in a red sharpie. He had also noticed some of your things had gone missing from your shared bedroom. Things like clothing items, books, bags, even your toothbrush.

He had a feeling he knew what was coming, but the part of him that hoped for the best was praying that you wouldn't do it. You loved Fred with every fibre of your being, you wanted to spend your entire life with him, but you couldn't continue to do so until the world was calmed.

So, slowly but surely, you had been packing your belongings into a single trunk and duffle bag, preparing to escape and flee into the night.

You knew the Ministry was after you — you were muggleborn. They'd be able to track you down and bring you in for questioning as soon as they got you. And you couldn't let that happen.

The last night you were home, you approached Fred, jam-packed trunk in hand.

"Freddie, I think we need to talk," you sighed, the prickling in your throat alerting you that the tears were bound to come soon, "It's important."

He nodded, face falling, "I think I know what you're going to say."

Your heart sunk lower by the second. His voice had sounded so defeated, so sad. His eyes went back and forth between your own and the heavy trunk you were holding in your hand.

"Freddie," you placed the trunk down and sat next to him, gently holding his hand with your own, "I don't want to do this. But you know they'll come after me. I can't stay here."

"Why can't I come with you?" he asked quickly, eyebrows shooting up, "I can pack a bag quickly and we can run away together. Just the two of us."

Your head dropped and you took a moment before looking back up at him, "Fred, I can't. I can't put you in danger. I'd hate myself forever if something bad happened to you and I could have done something about it."

He seemed to understand what you were saying, but he tried to fight you anyways, "And what if they get to you? You'll be all alone."

"I'll have my wand," you sighed, "And I'll be hiding the whole time. If ever you need my help for anything, I'll keep my eyes peeled for your patronus."

"They'll be tracking yours, you can't send me anything back. How am I supposed to know you're still alive?" his voice was growing louder as he stood up, running his hands through his hair in stress, "I'm not going to be able to sleep if I don't know you're alive."

"Fred," you felt helpless as you watched his face form into a frown, "Please. This is hard enough as it is. I need you to trust me."

He ran his hand down his face, eyes wild, "I can't lose you."
