You had found it rather amusing, really. The red suit hugging Fred's body, the fake white beard strapped around his head only to slide down every time he'd speak. He even had the little hat — pom pom hitting the side of his cheek when he'd turn to face you.
You weren't sure if he'd dress up as Santa this year with how chaotically busy the store had been. He hadn't gotten the chance to go buy a suit, and this ended up being one of the times you were overly thankful he had a twin. George and his family were out of town for the holidays, so he gave Fred the a-okay to go over and get the freshly hemmed Santa suit hanging in the basement storage.
It was still comically large; the fabric of his pants pooling around his feet, his hands nearly swallowed by the sleeves. It suited him, somehow. He was never one to wear "trendy" clothing — opting for baggy sweaters and slacks most of the time. So, somehow, he pulled off the Santa suit.
He had all of the wrapped gifts around him on the table. The gifts that you had wrapped, but that he was going to place under the tree. You knew with certainty that your daughters were still awake, probably whispering and giggling under the blankets with their flashlight waiting to hear the jingle of the bells. And if they came down and saw you placing the presents... well, that'd just bum them out.
As if reading your mind, Fred turned to you with a quiet voice, "Should have bought you a little Misses Claus outfit. Don't you think?"
With the wiggle of his eyebrows and the way his eyes scanned you up and down, you knew his thoughts were far from innocent, "Oh, don't be cheeky, Freddie. We've got the girls just upstairs. Besides, if I did wear a little outfit, you wouldn't be able to focus on Christmas."
He nodded and let out a small chuckle, "You're right about that, love. You'd be stealing all of my attention." He placed a quick kiss on your lips before turning to the table, beginning to scoop the gifts up into his arms. You had bought this new wrapping paper, it had little sleighs that circled around, Santa giving a small wave every time he'd pass in front of the side you were facing. Magic really was fun. Even on something as bland as wrapping paper.
You had to give him a quick reminder about which ones were fragile — he'd been so busy with the shop that you were the one who had done the shopping — and help him figure out how to place them neatly under the tree.
After a few trips back and forth from the dining table to the tree by the living room window, he had managed to place pretty much all of the boxes. You'd stuffed the stockings full of sweets and lollies while he had done so, doing your little part to be useful, and given them over to him so he could hang them over the fireplace.
The string lights were all on around the house — by request of your youngest daughter, who was worried Santa wouldn't be able to see his way round — and the whole image just looked so festive. Fred in his obnoxiously red suit, standing next to a gift-filled tree, a plate of cookies on the coffee table.
"Oh, don't forget to eat those," you pointed the plate out to Fred, "And take a few bites of the carrots. Just so they have something to freak out about in the morning."
