Chapter 5

I woke up to the buzzing sound of an alarm clock.  "Oooowww" I screamed in agony and covered my ears.  The buzzing sound finally stopped, and I turned to see Miss Monroe,

"Good morning Cole, slept tight?" She asked, smiling.  Her smile was really intoxicating. I wondered if a lot of men were after her hand in marriage.  "Yeah," I retorted.

"Anyway, freshen up and follow me.  We've got quite a lot to do today," She exclaimed and walked out.

I struggled out of my bed, took my bath, brushed my teeth, dressed up, and followed after her.

I was surprised to see the walkway empty.  I thought the place would have been preoccupied.  We walked through a door and came out into a huge room.  The whole place was crowded with twice the number of people in Hepton Village seated anxiously waiting for my arrival.  Miss Monroe stepped up on the platform and gestured at me to follow her.  I took a seat beside Mr. Grayson on the platform and observed the people.  Of course, I did not notice any 17-year-old teenager among the people, which gave me the creeps.  I actually began to feel lonely even though I didn't have any friends in Hepton Village.

"Neuron Tek, also known as N-Tek, was established to extinguish the Neuron Hex virus.  Over the years, we've had different sectors working hand in hand to find a solution for this virus.  For example, the scientists have been trying to find a cure whilst the field agents bring them samples to work with".  She proclaimed in her silky tone.  I hadn't noticed this, but I had developed a liking to the Lady. It was as if she was a striking image of the mother I never knew.

"Today, our search for a cure is over.  When the Neuron Hex virus was first discovered, scientists made two samples, and one ended up being a cure.  Unfortunately, they tested the wrong sample, and we were all left to think the right sample was destroyed.  Our research team delved into the issue and have found the cure.  Without further ado, I will like to present to you the man with the cure for Neuron Hex, Cole Pierce".  She exclaimed, and everyone cheered and clapped their hands.

I walked to the microphone with a smile on my face. I couldn't believe she called me a man.  I stood in front of the microphone, thinking I was just there to show my face, not realizing I had to make a speech.

"Eeerrmm, I really don't know what to say, but I never knew I was immune to the Neuron Hex virus until yesterday.  I mean, who knew I would be here today.  It was just yesterday that I had another exciting round of the cat and mouse with my favorite cop, Sheriff Ladly.  He is this fat cop who keeps chasing me in Hepton Village.  He is so bent on catching me that he even ignores serious cases to go after me.  I mean, who does that?  The point is, I really miss having Sherriff Ladly around, but if I'm needed here at N-Tek, I would be glad to offer you my services." I gave my speech, and the people laughed and clapped.  "Man, Sheriff Ladly wasn't even here, and he is making me a star.  I owe you one, Ladly". The only one who wasn't enthused by my speech was the grumpy old Mr. Grayson, but of course, I didn't mind.

After my speech, the crowd was dismissed, and Miss Monroe led me to a laboratory not quite far from where I was.  "We need to run some tests on you, Cole:  She relayed.  "For what?" I inquired. "We need to extract the cure from you." "And how are we to do that?"  I asked, looking at the equipment around me.

"That's simple, Cole, just take a seat."  One of the men in the room instructed.

I sat down, and he extracted blood from my veins.  The feeling of having a needle put in me was painful, but I dealt with it.

"Alright, Cole, you may return to your room.  We're done ".  Miss Monroe exclaimed as the man transferred the blood into a test tube and placed it in a centrifuge.

I stared at the laboratory one more time and returned to my room.
