Chapter 17

"I warned you, Cole. This will be the cause of your own doing" A voice declared in my head. I looked around in confusion for the figure of a man around me. The lights began to flicker and came back on but this time it glowed red. I looked up ahead and saw a bunch of Class C infectants ahead of us. It didn't look like they were 15 but instead 30.
"Brittany, get ..." I tried to alert her but an infectant got ahead of me and slammed her into the wall. The monster opened its mouth to bite her as she tried to recover her composure. It was now or never. In a moment of rush, I jumped at the class C infected and without knowing it, I triggered the cure.
"Ahhh!!!" I screamed in agony and my voice almost took the place down. The pain I felt this time was worse than the first like my cells were burning up.
Meanwhile At the Control Room ...
"What's happening Young?" Mr. Grayson jumped up in alert at the footage they were of field 13. "I don't know but we've got to get them out of there. Initiate code blue!!" Agent Young said and ordered a group of people.
"No!!" Miss Monroe protested and the commotion died down. "What do you mean ma'am? They're going to die..." Agent Young tried to state. "No! Don't do anything. I'm interested in what's going to happen" Miss Monroe exclaimed and everyone stared at her in panic.
I clutched to the ground and held my hand. My right hand was burning up and I couldn't stand the sensation. "Cole!" Brittany called out in anxiety and rushed over, forgetting about the knocked-out, cured infectant. "How did you..."
"No... Brit, this isn't ... the time for that. You've got to get out of here". I demanded in pain as I took a look at the rest of the infectants. They were recovering from the massive interference I created in the sound waves.
"I can't hold back any longer, Cole. I have something to tell you" Brittany said, "ever since I first saw you I've had a huge crush on you. I was the one behind your successes in breaking the rules. I deleted the camera footage and covered up for you but I couldn't tell you. Cole, I love you" She revealed and I stared in awe and shock.
"Brittany, I ... "I didn't even finish my statement but she grabbed me and kissed me passionately. "I don't care if I die here, Cole. I just want to do it in your arms" she declared.
I felt the pain in my hand disappear and stood up. It was high time I got serious. I figured out where the voice came from, it was a warning from Nate.
"Brittany, I want to get out of the way," I said in a serious tone.
I lifted my jacket and pulled out the dual M1 840 handgun I picked up. In a flash, I fired two headshots and took two infectants down. This is a note from class. The easiest way to kill an infectant is with a headshot. The monsters growled and attacked with great speed. I sighed and dashed at them. One tried to strike me but I slid down on my knees, spun my guns, and tripped two down hitting their legs with the guns. Another strike whilst I was kneeling and I bent backwards. I pointed the two guns at his head and fired. I got up with a vengeance and grabbed the face of another infected. I turned his face and punched him as hard as I could. One more tried to catch me off guard but a bullet slammed into it.
"I'm gonna help" Brittany protested, holding out a revolver. I smiled at her and sidestepped, dodging the scratch of a female infected. I lifted my leg and knocked the attacker in the groin. I turned and punched, elbowed, and shot three others. Brittany kept shooting at them from a fair distance but they soon turned their attention towards her.
"Cover your ears" I alerted her, plugging my earlobes and taking out a Sonic G5 disrupter. "Where did you get that from?" She asked in surprise. "I stole it!" I replied and slammed it on the ground. The Class C's were said to have advanced hearing which is right because as soon as I activated it, they clutched to the ground from the outrageous screech.
"Come on I grabbed Brittany and bolted. Another infected appeared from nowhere and I rolled over it, I tagged it with a small pitch grenade and ran with Brittany before it exploded. We were almost at the exit but then hands started to break through the thin layered walls. I held Brittany back just in time as one hand tried to grab her.
"We're stuck" I proclaimed as another batch of infections blocked our path, I was running out of weapons and the situation was looking dire but then we heard a high-pitched sound. The sound disappeared and an explosion followed right after, consuming the infections.
"Go, go, go, go !!!" I heard a voice commanded behind the cloud of smoke and squad units began to come through and pass by us.
"You alright kids?" Commander Riley Snott inquired as he approached us.
"Kind of. Did we pass?" I asked. He laughed. "You did just fine" he exclaimed.
