"Paper or plastic," the cashier obviously just wanted to leave. It was 11 at night and pouring down rain.
"I brought my own bag," I replied as I placed the reusable bag on the checkout counter.
"Of course you did," the cashier retorted. I watched as she checked out my items. A pair of vans, a toaster, and a bag of sour patch kids. What a weird combination, I seem like such a freak! Oh, well. I swiped my card, took my thinks, and left.
I pulled my black hood over my head as I ran out to my car. As I unlocked the door and started it up, I realized how late I was. Mom was going to be pissed!
I pretty much floored it all the way home.
She can't be too mad, though. At least I bought the toaster she wanted. But I was supposed to be home an hour ago and it's 11:15.
As I pulled into the driveway I could see the kitchen light on. I walked on in and tried to sneak up to my room unnoticed but I was too wet. My shoes were squeaking all over the place.
"Ray! Where have you been?" She didn't look to happy.
"Well... You see they didn't have the toaster at TJ Maxx and I couldn't find the shoes in his size at the mall downtown..." I really was pretty slow even given those conditions, but i didn't need to point that out.
"You got it at Sears?" She asked already looking the toaster over. I could tell she liked it.
"Yeah," I was already at the top of the stares. I wanted to get away before she remembered what time it really was.
Before I went to sleep I looked over the shoes. They were really nice and fit Jackson perfectly. He would love them! I slipped them and the sour patch kids into a gift bag. His birthday may be on Saturday but I would forget to wrap them if I didn't do it now.
As I woke up to the sun peeking through my window, I looked at my clock. Great, it was 7:43. I was going to be late!
I brushed my teeth, then walked into my closet. I didn't have much time so I through on the first thing I saw. A navy blue tank top and some ripped up skinny jeans. Time was running short so I guess I had to leave my hair curly today instead of flattening it to death.
"Hey Ray!" Jake said happily as he put up the cereal.
"Can't talk I'm going to be late!" I had no time to deal with my brother. He shrugged and walked out the door. I pulled my hoody on and grabbed a granola. Sure school was a block away but it is starting in 3 minutes!
Slipping on my flip flops, I picked up my back pack and ran out the door. I looked ahead and saw Jake not to far ahead. I wouldn't be late after all.
As I got to the school doors someone flung me around. It was Jackson.
"Hey there! I thought you were going to be late," he said.
"No I was just ignoring you," I replied sarcastically. Jackson's my best friend, he always walks with me before school. Never once had we left each other hanging.
He laughed as we walked to class. The late bell rang as soon as we sat down. Man, I was lucky!
History was boring as usual, but I don't mind. I sit in the back, so our half blind teacher never notices anything I do. Normally I'll talk to jackson (he sits in front of me) or ready the text book if I am completely lost. I'm not a slacker, so my grades are pretty high.
Today Jackson spent all of class trying to convince me that tomorrow was spelled "twomarrow". It didn't help much that I'm worlds worst speller.
After a few more hours of boredom in 3 other classes, it was time for lunch. Jackson was already waiting for me under the pavilion.
"Today's your choice, what do you want to eat?" We always take turns going out for lunch or eating in the cafeteria.
"Dion's!" I said as we walked to his car. I almost always choose Dion's or the cafeteria. The food in the cafeteria wasn't horrible like other schools so it could suffice when I wasn't craving pizza.
"Shot gun!" I screamed.
"There are only too of us..."
"So! I don't wanna drive." He laughed and shut the driver side door behind him.
After school, I ran in the front door, letting the screen slam shut. As I climbed the stairs I remembered; only one more day of eleventh grade! Honestly, I can't believe the years almost over. It's seemed that way for awhile though.
Ever since I moved here I was 14, it has felt like time just flew by. Maybe it's the weather. In Albuquerque it almost always the perfect temperature and never humid. Or it could be the way that almost everything is so close.
But truthfully, I think it's Jackson. When I first moved here I was depressed. I thought no one would accept me. It didn't help that I wasn't accepted before either. But when I first started hanging out with Jackson, I felt free again. I was finally able to open up and have fun.
The blinds were open in my room. I hate it when they are, but Jake loved the view my windows had. Normally I would get on to him, but since it is his last week of high school I decided to cut him some slack.
As much as I hate to say it, I'm going to miss him when he goes to collage.
