I could see Mrs. Jamerson stood at the entrance, she never really liked me.
I squeezed Luke's hand and he put on a convincing smile, Lily Jamerson looked him up and down, even a woman in her 40's still found Luke attractive.
"Alex, honey, great to see you! how have you been?" She asked with a fake smile.
She launched forward and pulled me into a posh lady hug.
I reluctantly hugged her back.
"Fine thank you, and yourself?" I asked with manners like I'd always been taught.
"Great, a lot of prep for this evening is tiring me out but it'll be worth it. Please take some champagne!" She sighed gesturing towards a waiter holding a tray with champagne on it.
She doesn't worry that we are underage, my parents allow it and Luke is with me.
We walked forward after Mrs. Jamerson and Luke introduced themselves.
My parents trailing in after us, I looked around at the pianist and to all the guests.
Most people in there knew me but some looked shocked at my attire. Then I noticed that Luke had put a smart jacket over his white shirt and black skinny jeans.
I bet we looked odd.
I dropped his hand as I saw Caroline walking towards us.
Luke looked at me with a strange look but I just ignored it.
"Alex. Thank God, this was just too boring, I think people were just waiting for you to show up." Caroline chuckled as she stood beside me, bumping her hip against mine.
I chuckled back and waved at various people I have known for years through my parents.
"Well I'm here and ready for the party. Anyway, Caroline this is Luke. His family are staying with us for the week." I gestured between them and they exchanged hey's.
I saw my friend Robbie across the room and we made eye contact and both broke into smiles.
"Please excuse me for a minute, Caroline stay with Luke" I asked moving away but placing my hand on Luke's arm first.
I almost rugby tackled Robbie as we embraced in a big bear hug.
"How you been?" He asked into my hair.
I let go of him and took a step back, I hadn't seen him in months. His parents had taken him off around the world.
"Average. You? Well I know the answer you've been around the world and back!" He just laughed and so did I.
It felt good to finally laugh with someone besides family and Caroline.
I looked back at Caroline and Luke. His eyes lingered on mine.
"Look I've got to get back but text me yeah?!" I tell Robbie and pad back across the room to Luke.
I open my mouth to speak but I'm interrupted by the chiming of a knife to a glass.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I would just like to thank everyone for coming. The Riley's, the Sauderson's, the Brooks and..." Mr. Jamerson's speech kept drowning on as Luke snaked his arm around my waist.
"Also the Hemmings I believe, brought by our honoured guests the Wayland's!" He finished and everybody's glances shot towards mine and Luke's parents.
They smiled gracefully and took a sip from the champagne.
"We all commiserate them for their loss, our loss of their son Stefan." He said sadly. Murmurs arose and I looked at my parents. They looked down but my father looked up and thanked Mr. Jamerson for his condolences.
Touchy subject to say the least.
"Now everyone please enjoy a live performance by my own daughter Melissa. She'll be singing A Thousand Years" he said and clapped her as she came on confidently.
Bitch.
I locked eyes with her and her smile faltered, we never got on to say the least. She was never scared of me just intimidated.
Luke pulled my waist and then my hand and pulled me to the corner of the room as Melissa started singing. We could just see each other's features up close as that part of the room was lit by candlelight.
"Do you know what I realised?" He asked me.
I furrowed my brow and shook my head.
"That I haven't kissed you yet. I really want to you know." He whispered and I felt my heart swell.
"Maybe you should try it, see as you really want to and all." I smiled back at him tilting my head to play it out.
He leaned forward slighting and looked at my lips, I felt so self-conscious.
Then he softly put his lips against mine. Mine and his moulding together in harmony.
Our hands still held together, I pulled mine out and put it on his cheek. His now free hand on my back.
Our kiss grew deeper and deeper, my lips parted and his tongue hit mine and they played together and I couldn't think of anything else.
He pulled back and I opened my eyes to see home staring at me.
"So, did it live up to your expectations?" I asked, my confidence talking for me.
"More so." He replied and latched his lips on mine once more.
"Good." I said pulling back.
"Well wasn't that great everybody! Please let's have a round of applause for my daughter Melissa!" Joel Jamerson said started the clapping for himself.
Me and Luke joined in, me only clapped twice.
We walked back into clear view and I could see eyes on me.
I couldn't be more happier in that moment. Nothing could bring me down.
I looked over to my parents, there demeanour strong but not convincing to me. Then I remembered.
Stefan.
Stefan.
Stefan.
My smile dropped and I looked down, remembering my brother.
Luke kissed my cheek and I looked up to see Melissa staring at him and scowling at me.
"Excuse me for a moment would you?" I asked Luke and he nodded.
I walked towards the bathroom door and opened it, almost slamming it behind me.
I walked to the sink and turned the cold water on, waiting for the numbingly cold to occur then pushing my wrists underneath the pulsing water.
That always seemed to cool and calm me down.
"Who the hell is that?" Melissa.
"Who?" I asked, not bothering to look at her, my eyes closed as I turned the water off and grabbed a hand towel rubbing my wrists dry.
"That boy, surely he's not interested in you." She scoffed. Insecurities broke through.
"No he's probably not. But he's here with me so just refrain from being a bitch tonight would you?" I asked facing her now and talking calmly while crossing my arms and putting my weight on one foot while bending the other knee slightly.
She rolled her eyes and I pushed past her and opened the door and stormed out.
I saw my parents and Luke's and Luke stood by the hosts. I walked straight towards the exit not responding to my Mothers calls.
I turned around and spoke rather loudly.
"As always, it's been a pleasure." People were looking as I picked up a full glass of champagne and downed in it one.
I smiled and walked out grabbing my keys from my pocket. The cool air hit me and I felt alive.
