Chapter 9: Attempting to Talk

All I did was sit there silent listening to Nejire start yelling. During this, I decided to go outside and get some fresh air. I sat on the stairs leading to the front door of the house as I let out a sigh. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and looked through Instagram and liked a few posts. As I was scrolling I got a text from Tamaki. I just pulled the notification down from the top of my phone to view it so he couldn't tell I had read it. His message read, "Hey where are you?" I decided I should answer so he doesn't think I left.

Tamaki

Tamaki: Hey where are you?

Y/n: I'm just sitting on the front steps. I needed a bit of fresh air.

Tamaki: Oh okay, mind if I join you?

Y/n: No not at all! I just don't like listening to people fighting.

Read 2:40pm

As I put my phone away I heard the door open and turned around. Standing in the doorway was the dark-haired boy. I smiled at him and patted beside me gesturing for him to come to sit down. He obliged and was sitting next to me looking down as per usual. "S-sorry about them. When it c-comes to my anxiety Mirio can g-get defensive," he stated breaking the silence. "It's fine, I would get defensive of it too. Especially since she knows you as well as she does." I replied lightly putting my hand on his shoulder.

As I put my hand on his shoulder he jumped a little. "Sorry I didn't mean to scare you!" I apologized and took my hand off of him quickly. "It's fine don't worry about it." He looked up with a small smile. I wonder why he didn't stutter, maybe he's finally getting used to me? I mentally questioned, as I returned the smile. "Sooooo, I have a question you don't have to answer if you don't want to okay," I stated as a few seconds of silence between us had passed. He looked at me and nodded which I took as a go-ahead. "Okay so are you and Nejire dating? Sorry if that's too personal! Again you don't have to answer if you don't want to!" after asking I panicked a bit as his expression changed and he looked back at the ground. "No, we aren't. I actually like someone else," he mumbled the last part but I didn't bother asking again.

"Oh okay, I just kinda thought with how she always latches onto you and follows you like a lost puppy maybe you two were," I whispered but he heard me and looked up. I caught a look at his face in my peripheral vision. He looked.. sad? "I honestly hate when she-" he was cut off by the blue-haired girl who came storming out of the house and sat beside Tamaki while Mirio sat beside me. I put a hand on Mirio's shoulder and gave him a reassuring look that everything was fine.

He smiled in return and grabbed my hand giving it a soft squeeze. I never thought he could get that mad. I thought, staring at the ground. There were a few minutes of silence before Nejire got up dragging poor Tamaki along with her. After she shut the door I let out a sigh and leaned on Mirio's shoulder. "I'm sorry," he whispered looking down, twiddling his thumbs. I put my hand on his forearm, "you don't need to apologize for anything." I replied softly, taking my hand off his arm as my phone started vibrating. I looked at who was calling me. It was James so I answered putting it on speaker because my head hurt.

"Hey, little dude what's up?" I asked, rubbing my head a bit. "I was just wondering when you were coming home. I miss you.." he replied sounding sad. My heart quenched a bit knowing he has separation anxiety with me. "Not until tomorrow sometime. Are you getting anxious already?" I retaliated, catching Mirio's attention. He looked at me confused. "Yeah... I know I'm getting anxious over nothing but I can't help it. After mom and dad died you know I just don't want you to die too." he said sadness growing in his voice. Mirio put his arm around me noticing I was tearing up. "It's okay James. I'm not leaving you anytime soon I can promise you that." I replied, forcing a smile on my face trying not to sound like I was crying. He went quiet for a second before answering. "Okay... I guess I'll see you tomorrow then.." by this point he was crying and I could tell. I let out a small sigh before answering him. "If it makes you feel better you can sleep in my room tonight." he sniffled a bit hearing me say this. "Okay, thanks sis bye.." "Bye kiddo." I hung up and wiped my eyes.

I looked up at Mirio who was looking down at me. I tried to force a smile onto my face as he stared at me. "Gotta love siblings." I finally said, continuing to wipe my eyes. Mirio didn't say anything but he turned and hugged me tightly. I felt so warm and safe as I hugged him back I started to relax. "I'm fine Mirio don't worry about it," I stated taking him hugging me as a sign he was worried. He let go and cupped my face with his hands looking into my eyes. "I won't push you to tell me anything but if you want to talk I'm willing to listen for as long as it takes," he spoke softly. "Thanks, Mirio, you're the best," I replied as I leaned my face into his right hand and closed my eyes smiling.

"What do you say we go inside and stuff our faces?" he laughed a bit and I laughed too. "Hell yeah let's go!" I chuckled as we stood up and headed inside. Tamaki and Nejire were nowhere to be seen. I just shrugged it off and started stuffing my face with Mirio. I decided to send a picture of both of us to my little brother and Snapchat. Mirio looked right before I took the picture and he smiled. After I took it I saved the picture then sent it to my brother typing "See I'm fine! Nothing to worry about, little dude!" After I hit send I looked at Mirio who was slightly blushing. "Can you send that to me please?" he asked, smiling wide. "Of course!" I replied as I sent it to him. He instantly popped up in the chat and saved it to his phone.

I wanna start by saying Happy New Year! I'm sorry if this one was kind of confusing. The next chapter will be in Mirio and Tamaki's POV's, so I can try to clear up a few things once I reread this to see what I need to clarify!!!
