I woke up to silence and sunlight, the storm had finally passed. I was so hungry I felt like my stomach was devouring itself desperately trying to survive. I looked over at the Gladers that had survived. We had lost a few people in the lightning storm and the passage before that. I looked over at Thomas, he had his arms pulled up to his chest, tear stains on his cheeks and legs slightly bent as he lay on his side, facing me. I sighed and quickly tip toed over to him silently. I bent down and took a quiet breath in and out before kissing him softly first on his mouth then his forehead, lingering for a couple seconds to savour the moment with each one. I then quickly tip toed back to my place on the floor and laid in the same position he was and faced him. His eyes fluttered open and he looked around. I quickly shut my eyes before he could look at me, I didn't know why but I felt like he shouldn't know that I was awake. Maybe make him think it was a dream.

Suddenly people started falling through the hole up to the 2nd floor. Everyone woke up and stood to face them. I stood in the corner, behind everyone and tried to shut out the shouting and arguing. I thought only of the calm life back in the Glade, trying desperately to remember anything from before I woke up in that dreaded box. At some point I heard punching, then two people leave the room with the closing of doors and a silence afterwards. Then, with no warning, a memory appeared in my mind. I am 5 years old (I have no idea how I know but I do) and I am playing in an orchard with 2 other boys and a girl. I knew these children, it was Thomas, Theresa and Aris. We were climbing trees, chasing each other and just being kids. We even laid side by side in the grass in a clearing and pointed out shapes in the clouds. I stumbled before placing my hand on the wall to steady myself. I gasped for breath, I remembered! It had to be true! It felt so real, it couldn't have been a dream. People were talking amongst themselves and taking no notice of me as usual. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath before sliding down the wall and hugging my knees to my chest. With that one memory, triggered another 2.

In the second memory, I must be 7, so are the others. One by one, we were taken to a lab and studied, tested, operated on. I didn't have the operation, the others did however and were able to talk without moving their lips. I felt so completely left out. I missed out on whole conversations, secrets, arrangements.

The third was when we had to be 14 years old. Theresa and Aris were not there, it was just Thomas and I. I sat on a bench in a backyard with my hands in my lap, I looked up at him as he smirked. He placed a hand on one side on my cheek and kissed me. I kissed him back and we made out on a bench. We ended up on the grass, hidden because it was so long. He was on top on me, we were making out and I felt a rush of joy and excitement crash down onto me. The memory ended with us lying side by side in the long grass, holding hands and staring at the stars.
