Ava McNeill sat at the wheel of her car, her girlfriend in the passenger seat and Matty and Olivia in the back. They were on their way to Ava's family home for the charity evening. Ava's family were on the wealthy side and so they often held posh events at their large family home. Olivia had made sure to tell Matty about the significance of the evening and so they both dressed accordingly for the event. It didn't make the footballer any less nervous. Not only did he have the pressure of some fancy event on his shoulders, surrounded by people he didn't know but he also had the pressure of having to act 'normal' in front of Olivia when his feelings for her were growing stronger by the second. It was a big ask and something that Matty was dreading but as soon as the night was over, he could end things with Olivia and go back to normal.
"You okay? You seem kind of twitchy." Olivia whispered to Matty, noticing him playing with his hands and continuously bouncing his knee up and down. It was difficult not to notice and Olivia was determined to find out why Matty had been so on edge recently. She figured that it was something to do with football but the team had been performing so well recently and Matty had only missed one game through suspension.
"Fine. Just nervous." He lied to her and although Olivia wasn't completely convinced by what he had told her, it was enough to throw her off his trail. She moved into the middle seat, there no longer being any space between the two of them. The brunette grabbed Matty's hands and held them in her own. Her aim was to reduce Matty's nerves but instead, she ended up heightening them.
The car pulled up outside of the large house and Olivia could already see how the guests were overflowing out of the building and she felt a wave of nerves hit her. She had only promised to come because she was supporting Ava. She needed to be there for her and that wasn't going to change just because she got cold feet.
"These things are way too posh for my liking," Olivia whispered to Matty as they walked up the stairs together. He uttered out a small laugh but Olivia wasn't oblivious to how retracted he was being. She didn't like it. She missed the Matty who would joke around with her.
They made their way into the house and stopped behind Ava who was greeting her parents.
"Ava, it's nice to see that you brought some friends along with you," Laura smiled at her daughter, engulfing her in a tight hug that was sure to have knocked the breath out of her.
Olivia giggled to herself at the sight of Ava struggling in her mum's arms. She didn't know why she found it so amusing but she did.
"It would have been nicer if you had brought along a boyfriend like Olivia has," Laura whispered and her husband, Tom, nodded his head along with his wive's words. He agreed with what she was saying. They were both desperate for their daughter to find someone and settle down one day. They were dreaming of the day when they would become grandparents and be able to spoil their grandchildren.
"Mum, I'm gay." The words came tumbling out of Ava's mouth before she could stop them or make some sort of speech to soften the blow for her parents but she had said it. It was out in the open and there was no turning back for the blonde girl.
The room, despite its many guests still mingling and conversing, was thick with tension. Laura and Tom were stunned as they stared at their daughter and her female companion. Olivia had no idea how the evening was going to end. She knew how much of a traditional family the McNeill's were and their traditional values but she couldn't ever imagine them turning their backs on their only child. The tension was becoming too much and without thinking, Olivia reached for Matty's hand and squeezed it tightly.
"Oh honey," Tom reached forward and pulled his daughter into his chest tightly. He loved his daughter with everything inside of him and nothing was going to change that. Nothing.
"What's the motto? Love is love." Laura smiled at the blonde girl in admiration. Her family was still going to be the same. She could still hope for the same things as before. She could still have grandkids and she couldn't wait to meet her daughter's new girlfriend.
"We were thinking of re-decorating your room for when you come to stay. Maybe we could do a rainbow theme? Would you like that?" The McNeill's whisked their daughter away and Olivia couldn't help but giggle at what it was that they were talking about. Although they didn't fully understand everything yet, they were making an effort and that was something that Ava appreciated.
Olivia pulled Matty by his hand, away from the grand entrance of the mansion-like house and towards the buffet table where they grabbed some drinks and a few snacks to keep them going through what was going to be an exhausting evening. Little did Olivia know that the night was going to be worse for one of them.
note from e !
Hello, my loves! I'm back with another update for you all. This was supposed to be up when Poland qualified for the knockouts but that game was sooo tense and I've been so exhausted from placement that I just never got round to it so here we go.
Poland qualified for the round of sixteen and I know that it's a team effort but I am so proud and so happy for Matty because he has been exceptional. It wasn't that long ago that he got his first cap for Poland and now he's in the knockout stages of the World Cup. Unbelievable 😍
Biggest surprise of the world cup so far?
- for me, definitely the fact that Belgium went out. Personally, I thought they were so poor across the whole competition but to be ranked second in the world, it just wasn't good enough.Enjoy and stay safe!
Lots of love, e x
