Matty Cash had been going through a period of self-loathing ever since he had his outburst at Ava McNeill's house. He had never meant for it to happen that way and the idea that he had been the one to hurt Olivia so badly after what he did was something that kept him awake at night.

Despite everything that had happened, life moved on for Matty. He was training almost every day, playing on weekends and sometimes mid-week. The only difference now was that he no longer had Olivia in his life. He hadn't heard from her but he didn't expect to. Not when he had hurt her so badly. He blamed himself because he hadn't even attempted to reach out or apologise. Matty figured that she wouldn't want to hear from him. He wasn't sure if he was making a mistake by not messaging her. He had made a lot of mistakes lately.

The team had had a good run of results recently and training had finished early so Jack had asked his temporary housemate and John to go out to lunch with him. They deserved it after all of the hard work that they had put in. Not to mention that Jack wanted to avoid paying by allowing the first person to receive a notification to pay.

The trio decided on a local restaurant that was located not too far away from the training centre. They decided to walk it instead of taking their cars. Despite a long training session, Matty needed the fresh air to clear his head and the other two boys were well aware of that fact.

"So, Matty, what's going on?" John asked as the three of them sat down at a table in the corner of the restaurant. It had a cosy interior and the staff all seemed to be friendly. It was a nice change from all the overly crowded chain restaurants that were dotted all around the city.

It didn't take long for Matty to open up to his two new closest friends. They had been clued in on everything that had happened up until that point. They had both been there for him when he needed help with his 'situation' and he was grateful for that. He couldn't have asked for better teammates when he showed up at Aston Villa.

He explained everything to Jack and John right from the very beginning. They needed to hear the entire story from start to finish and maybe Matty just needed to get everything off his chest once and for all.

"When we told you to end things and put yourself first, we meant for you to do it gently. Not whatever the hell it was that you did at her friend's house." Jack explained, half-joking. He couldn't believe that Matty had done something like that. He hadn't believed that he had it in him.

"Yeah, thanks for that, Jack," Matty rolled his eyes and stopped talking when the waiter approached their table, the plates of food that they had ordered in his hands. He wasn't in the mood for other people listening in to their conversation and hearing all about his failure of a love life.

"It wasn't intentional. I planned to tell her and let her down gently after the evening but something inside of me just snapped when her aunt asked how we met." The footballer sighed as he relived the night. It was still all so fresh in his mind.

His two friends exchanged sympathetic looks and before Matty knew what was happening, Jack had swiped Matty's phone and handed it over to John. They looked through his text messages. wanting to see how Matty had tried to explain himself to this girl that he was apparently so in love with. The two found it weird how they had never met her, Jack especially considering the fact that she had been at his house on numerous occasions to see Matty and yet he still had no idea what she looked like.

"Nae danger. You haven't even texted her about it?! Matty, are you stupid or what?" John spoke in exasperation and disbelief at how his teammate had pretended as if the entire situation had never happened. John knew that some people lived in denial but that wasn't Matty. It couldn't be. Not after he had spoken so candidly about it all.

"I thought she wouldn't want to hear from me!" Matty protested, watching as Jack stuffed his mouth full with spaghetti carbonara. The coaches would kill them for indulging in carbohydrates in the middle of the season when they had a backlog of games to play but the boys knew how to hide it from them all. What the coaches didn't know wouldn't kill them.

"That's beside the point here," Jack admitted, his voice muffled from all the food that was in his mouth. John grimaced at his best friend. He wondered how it was possible for so many women to be attracted to him when he acted like that. It truly was beyond him. If only the fans saw the side of him that John saw.

"You need some serious help. We need to help you come up with a plan." John decided as soon as he had finished what was on his plate and Jack nodded in agreement. Matty was hesitant but he needed a way to talk to Olivia and explain himself. He was desperate. He needed Olivia back in his life.

note from e !

It has been a minute since I updated this book and I am genuinely so sorry! I got so caught up with my F1 books that I seemed to neglect this one and forget that I hadn't finished publishing it. And on such a cliff hanger too! I'm so cruel, I'm so sorry. I won't neglect Matty and Olivia ever again.

It's going to be a double update tonight so you'll get to see what plan Matty has hatched with the help of McGinn and Jack :)

What do you think is going to be the big transfer story of the summer?
- the Mount and Rice deals went through a lot quicker than I expected so I guess the attention is back on Harry Kane? I thought I heard he was close to going to Bayern though but I'm not sure as that source came from my dad...

Enjoy and stay safe!

Lots of love, e x
