Chapter One: Nightmares

Declan wakes up in a cold sweat again, the same dream, the same nightmare. He relives the night his wife was murdered and his world crashed. Declan sat there and tried to control his breathing and calm down, he was shaking and cold so he got out of bed and went into the bathroom to splash water on his face. As he looked at his reflection he could see what these dreams were doing and he also knew he was not going back to sleep again tonight. Dark circles under his eyes were getting worse, he stepped in the shower and just let the water run on him to try and soothe his nerves and try to wake up. He got out of the shower and went to check on his daughter Angelica and she was sleeping soundly, he could hear her softly snoring. He went to the kitchen and started the coffee, as he knew he was going to need it. He looked at the clock, 3 am and too early for making breakfast so he just made himself his first cup of coffee of the day and went to get dressed. He was deciding what to wear when he got lost in thought, back to a time where his wife would help him get dressed, he smiled remembering she would kiss him each time he added a piece of clothing. As he stood there his phone rang, he grabbed it and answered, " Hello?" " Hey, Declan this is Khai, sorry if I woke you but there is trouble at the construction site. I am headed there now but wanted you to know." " Thanks, I can be there in like 10 min I will meet you there, " Khai said," ok see you there." they hung up. Declan finished getting dressed and went into his Mom's room and woke her," Hey Mom something happened at the site and I have to go, Angelica is sleeping, I will call you later." Stacey said," Hope nothing too bad son, I got it here get going." "Love you, Mom. Thanks." " Love you too." Declan left the room, grabbed his keys, and went out the door. He was thinking it better not be the fucking vamps again I swear I will kill them all !! "

Declan got to the worksite and he saw Khai standing talking to the police he walked over and asked what happened, " I got here around 2:30 am to get the proposal out by 5 am and when I got here the office door was open and it looked like someone was looking for something. So I called the police right away but they did not find anything to point to who or what happened." " I am getting pretty tired of being a target and no one can do anything. Was anything missing?" Khai shook his head," not that I can tell." Declan said," I am going to recheck!" and stormed off.

Brady said," Since his wife's death he has been very mean, I mean I get it but we are trying to find the killer but without evidence what are we to do !" Khai replied," Give him time I mean it has only been like 6 months, he is still hurting." Brady nodded and said," Well I have to get back on patrol see you later." Khai nodded and started to walk back to the office to help Declan.

When Khai got to the office he saw Declan picking up all the papers and reading each one to make sure he had all the papers and nothing was missing. " find anything missing?" Declan said,'' Not yet but I am checking everything, I am not wanting anything to leak and I am looking for clues." " There might not be any at all Declan, I looked over things before the police got here and I did not see anything out of the ordinary, maybe they wanted it to look like something was missing, maybe it is a warning, I don't know." Declan just looked at Khai, " I am doing this to find the bastard that killed my wife. I am sure it was a vamp but I have to be sure." Khai cannot let Declan know he is one, " well I am here to help you, just let me know what you need." Khai went in the back and started cleaning up there. He was deep in thought when Declan was calling him, " Hey Khai !! " "Oh sorry what did you need ?" Declan smiled" I asked if you were hungry, I did not have time to eat, want to go grab something?" " Sure, " said Khai.

They went to the local dinner and went inside. Khai saw his favorite waitress, everyone called her Mom as she mothered everyone, she was a Vamp but no one ever did anything to her. Mom asked, " what brings you 2 here this early?" Khai smiled," It is your good cooking Mom why else." he hugged her tight and kissed her cheek. Declan laughed," Yes why else ." and he also hugged her and kissed her cheek. " Oh go on you 2 trying to flirt with this old lady." Khai smiled, " we keep trying maybe one of us will get you someday" They all laughed and Mom asked,'' What did you 2 want this morning ?" Declan said,'' Large coffee, strong and your famous eggs and bacon." Khai said,'' Coffee for me too, not as strong and a stack with sausage and hashbrowns with onions and peppers." Mom looked at Khai, "Peppers ugh." " Hey they are good for you." Mom laughed and said ready soon and walked over to another table and started gossiping with the ladies at the table. Declan and Khai grabbed a table closer to the back of the room. Khai asked,'' What are our next steps? Did you find anything? " Declan shook his head, " No I found nothing just like that night, No prints or anything. Makes me so fucking mad!" " I cannot find shit on anyone and I am trying to solve my wife's murder as the police are dragging their feet." Khai said,'' They have no evidence and you know it, always blaming them when they have done everything but recreate the crime to figure it out !" " You make me mad sometimes when you go around blaming Vamps with no proof, you don't think Mom knows, she does but she will never say anything to you! '' Declan just sat there looking at Khai, " what the hell was that?" "That was me telling you to shut your damn mouth until you have proof!! " Declan just sat there, " Someone fucking killed my wife and I need to know who it was." Khai sighs, " I know that but you don't know who and you are making people scared with what you are saying, Just think before you go off ok?" Mom came over with the food, Declan grabbed her arm, " Mom I am so sorry you know I don't mean you right?" Mom smiled, " I know dear but others are not like me and can hurt you so please be careful is all I ask ok?" "Ok Mom, I will, sorry" and he stood up and kissed her cheek, She smiled " Here's your food loves, enjoy." Both Declan and Khai both smiled and started to eat their food quietly
