Chapter 4: Memories and Nightmares

Declan woke with a start and thought he heard something. He got up and grabbed his gun and slowly walked out into the hall. It was dark except for the small light coming from his daughter's room, ever since the incident she cannot sleep in the dark. As Declan moved down the hall he did hear something coming from the living room near the kitchen. Declan crouched down and went behind the couch. He sat there and heard silence, nothing but silence. He got up and quickly turned on a light on the end table and the room became illuminated with light and there was nothing there. Declan stood slowly and walked around the house turning the lights on as he went. There was nothing, Declan was grateful and also mad. " What woke me up?" he thought. Declan then decided to look outside and when he got to his daughter's room he saw something on the ground was a small pouch tied tightly to his daughter's window ledge. He grabbed it and ripped it open, inside was a garlic bulb, rose petals and thorns, and a silver coin. He was confused and did not understand. " Where am I going to find out what this means or is ?" he thought. Declan wrapped it up again and thought, " Maybe I can have Khai check it out for me."

Declan got to work first that Monday and waited for Khai to get there. Kahi got there around 6 am and saw Declan and was wondering why he was there so early. " Hey, Khai I am glad you are here, I need a favor." " Sure, what do you need ?" Declan grabbed the small velvet bag and said," Here tell me what this is." and he handed it to Khai, Khai took it and opened it and was shocked by what he saw. " I have no clue." Kahi lied. Khao gave it back to Declan quickly. Declan laughed, " what are you scared of?" Khai said, " No I am allergic to roses." another lie. Khai hated lying but he cannot let Declan know the truth. Khai said," Mom at the restaurant might know she likes all that weird stuff. " Declan nodded," we can go for lunch, my treat ." Khai was not sure what to do but he agreed to go along.

They got to Mom's place around 1:00 pm and it was a little busy. Declan and Khai walked on and Mom waved " Take a seat I will be right with you boys." They both nodded and took a seat in a booth. Within about 5 minutes Mom came over," What can I get you ?" Khai smiled, " you know what I want ." Mom laughed," you know we have other food right ?" " I do but you have the best burgers in town, in the state, probably in the entire universe." " Really son? I think you just are trying to butter me up." Khai laughed. Declan said, " I should be the one buttering you up. I have a favor to ask of you." Mom looked at Declan," I am not going to marry you." she laughed. Declan laughed and said, " No I found this by my daughter's window. Can you tell me what it is? I asked Khai but he is allergic to roses." Mom looked at Khai and gave him a look. " Well, I am Mom, sorry." Mom looked at Declan, " this is a talisman to ward off vampires. Someone must know what happened and is trying to protect your daughter. Did she see anything that night ?" Declan sighed," She saw everything but she cannot remember anything. I like it this way but the police said if they cannot get any leads they are going to need her." Mom sighed," That poor child, I wish there was something I could do to help." Declan said," There is. Can you find out who put this there? I want to talk to them. I want to know why they did it and why they didn't speak to me first ?" Mom smiled," I will do what I can, you know that." Mom winked and walked away. As she walked she thought, Someone, knows what happened and also knows the person who did this is not done and wants to hurt Declan more. It seems this is personal and going to end badly for someone.

Declan and Khai finished eating, Khai said," I am going to go first. My mother was not feeling well and I want to check on her. I will stop by the house later ok? " Declan nodded. Khai threw twenty on the table, smiled " Her tip" and he walked out and got into his car. He was Khai went so weak right now and he was sure it was from those things in the pouch. He drove home and went looking for his Mom she would know. " Mom where are you?" " I am in my room son." Khai went up to her room, " Mom are you feeling better?" Victoria smiled, " Yes I am feeling much better thank you" "Mom I need to talk to you. Declan found a small bag with garlic, rose petals, and a silver coin in it. Why would someone do that by his daughter's room?" Victoria looked at Kahi, " How do you feel son ?" Khai looked at her," I am a little tired." " You should be those are all things someone would use to ward us off." " But why outside the home and not inside?" " This would not allow us to enter the home, mainly children are more innocent and might let one of us inside the home, So if these things are around the outside of the home we cannot get into the house." " I thought so but was not sure. So why would someone do this without telling Declan? " " Someone is wanting to help without being discovered '' is my thought. Might be another one of us, or someone who is friends with us and is trying to help." Khai smiled, " I knew you would know. I wish I could find out without raising suspicion. Is there a way ?" Victoria smiled, " I can find out faster than you once I know I will tell you ok? I will find out everything." Declan smiled and hugged his Mom," You are the best Mother! I love you !" " I love you, my son." Declan left her room and went to his and laid down on his bed, he didn't realize how tired he was, and soon he was asleep. That dream came back and he tried to stop it. He said in his mind NO STOP !!! It did not stop.
