florence cresswell quidditch pitch, 6:19 pm
— Florence had always loved quidditch. though she had never actually played on the team before, she had watched just about every game, and played at least a hundred times with her friends for fun.
so there she stood, her quidditch equipment on, broom in hand, surrounded by other ravenclaw students trying out for the team. though florence was confident in her abilities, she couldn't help the bundle of nerves eating at her stomach.
it didn't help that she was trying out for seeker, arguably the most important member of the team. it was the seekers job to catch the snitch, and the matches can't end until the snitch is caught.
"alright, listen up, all of you!" the captain, a boy named conner, florence thought, called out. "just because you were on the team last year, doesn't mean you'll make it this year. we're going to start with a scrimmage; we've got two seekers trying out, which is perfect. i'll number you off and then you lot get into the air!"
florence glanced around, recognizing a few people in the small crowd of blue jerseys. it wasn't until one boy sauntered over that a surge of confidence washed over her.
she heard him clear his throat, and turned to face him. "hello, florence. i hear you're going out for seeker?" his face was filled with humour, for the boy was far too sure of himself.
"william," she greeted, batting her eyelashes as she climbed onto her broom. "you heard correct. i suppose this means we'll be versing now, yes?"
as ravenclaws seeker from the year prior, william was filled with (what florence hoped was) false hope that it meant he was good. in reality, ravenclaw had lost more than half their games, and though nobody would say it, it was usually his fault.
he nodded, climbing onto his own broom and starting towards one side of the pitch. "may the best seeker win."
as florence flew into the air, joining her own team, she smirked as the match begun. shooting into the air, she watched from above, hoping that the higher she watched from, the more she would be able to see.
the game went on, both teams scoring on each other, and if anyone was watching closely, it was clear which keepers, beaters, and chasers would be picked. but as neither william nor florence had caught sight of the snitch, the mystery of the future seeker was unknown.
and right as florence had begun to accept that she sucked, she saw something shimmer across the field.
a giddy smile erupted on her face as she leaned forward, her broom speeding through the wind, her hair pushed back behind her. william caught sight of where she was headed, springing into action and chasing after her.
