HEROES ARE EVERYWHERE. Comics, movies, stories. They inspire us. They always save the day with they're super-human abilities, fighting enormous villans or saving people from danger. That's until your mother shouts at you 'For God sake, Joanne, go to bed!'. That's the part where everything collapses, dies, and you wake up in your room again. No fire breathing, no flying, just you, in the half-shadowed house, as quiet as always, among again the normal people. The people that take everything literally, the people that think about work, money, grades, or about what should they cook for dinner. I thought this will never change.
My name is Joanne and I live half of my life in my head. I built an entire Universe there: I am the hero that can blow up everything she touches, that can fly and travel in other Universes with a device made by the genius from her hero team. I even imagine that my favorite characters are there: Harry Potter, Katniss, Percy Jackson, and more. I sometimes spend hours thinking about my adventures there, disconnecting completely from this world, just to wake up again in dark, ashamed by the things I picture. But let's get to our main story.
-Joanne.
I stopped. Oh, yeah, I was going home from school. Almost forgot.
-Can you repeat at least ONE word from what I said so far? said Lindsey stepping in front of me.
Lindsey is my best friend. And she's perfect. Tall, strong, beautiful. Deep, green eyes, short, brown, hair... I wasn't that tall. I had black eyes. My hair was long, straight and black as well. And I was weak. Every time I look at her, I'm thinking: 'She can be a hero.'. And I couldn't. On the top of all these things, she knows me better that my mother. We have been friends since our first year at school. Now we're in the seventh grade and we're almost 14. She often has to shake me to wake me up when I'm dreaming with my eyes open. At first it was embarrassing for me, but we both got used to it as the time passed.
-'One', I responded.
-I just said that. It doesn't count.
-Sorry. Tomorrow is the non-imagination day, ok? I'll can listen to you.
The non-imagination day was the day that Lindsey and I established in that I'm not allowed to imagine anything, so I can be more present. Of course, we often talk without me slowly entering my private world, but when I do, it's not ok. It's pretty annoying for the people around me.
-Anyways, I just remembered something. Last week I got an weird envelope from somebody called TOS.
- What do you mean?
- I meant what I said. Some crazy guy signed 'TOS' on an envelope that I didn't open yet and sent me a letter. I was hopping we can open it together. We can find a way to scare these kids that think it's a good joke.
I laughed.
-Yeah. Let's stop at your place today. I'll text my mother.
My mother and I had a weird relationship. My father left us when I was 10. I'll never forgive that man.Since then, I stopped talking to mom. One parent already disappointed me. I didn't want to have my heart broken again if the other one did so as well. At first, mom tried to make everything the way it was before between us, but it didn't work for me. After a long time, she kinda got sick of my attitude and let me the way I was.
She's an eccentric person, skinny and tall. She looks like her skin is stiked to her bones, and she ALWAYS wears dresses and skirts. Even when she sleeps, she's got a nightgown. She always tries to convince me to wear one of those discussing, vulgar, spotted pieces of material of hers. But I never wear them. I like just some jeans and a shirt. Mother doesn't understand that. Sometimes, I could swear she hates me. Pissing me of because of my grades, because of Lindsey (mom thinks she's the opposite of a role model), because of my clothes, and, obviously, all the comics and the books that I read. Long story short, I don't like her at all.
Anyways, back to our main story.
Once we got to Lindsey's house, we got upstairs to her room and opened the envelope. Inside it it was a letter and some kind of circle, small, made of silver. Lindsey quietly read the letter, but when she passed it to me so I can read it as well, she seemed terrified. The letter sounded like this:
'Dear Lindsey Green,
This is your admitting letter to TOS, The Order of super-heroes, that is giving you the wonderful chance to become an actual hero. If you join us, you will leave your regular society and you will be trained to become a suitable hero in our world, in order to defeat the villans before they get to your helpless, non-super-human Universe. We will give you the super-power that suits you the best and, one day, you will be ready to fulfil you task and your dream in becoming a Peace Defender. All you need to do to get to us is to touch the metal circle with one finger and ask it to transport you to The Order of Super-heroes. We're waiting for you!
TOS'
