Janette Rivera awoke with a glare in her eye. She groaned and pressed a hand to her eyes. She inched out of the arms that were around her and crawled to the window, pulling the curtain so it blocked out the light. She turned to look at the man still lying on the bed, asleep. He’s toned and she smiles, he looks like a model even in his sleep. She considered crawling back into bed but decides against it. She grabs a t-shirt on the floor and walks to the bathroom. In only underwear, her legs look longer than they are in the mirror. She pulls her long through a hair band and pulls it into a messy bun. She washes her face as the man walks in behind her and starts the shower.
Janette stretches, showing off her curves. Janette knew what she had and she wasn't afraid to use it. “Want some company?” She says seductively as her boyfriend disappears behind the curtain.
“Oh yea, I forgot to tell you last night, we’re over. Sorry babe.”
Janette stands frozen, staring at herself in the mirror, “Excuse me?”
“Yea, my agent wants to give it a go.” He says behind the curtain as if it was nothing.
Janette can’t really breathe. She walks back into the bedroom and grabs her clothes, pulling them on as fast as possible before running out the door. Janette has been a dancer her whole life so she knows how to run. Her apartment is only two blocks away but she knows the beach is about five miles away so that’s where she heads.
She runs as fast as she can, her legs are burning by the time she hits sand. She can’t see the ocean through her tears so she just falls to the sand and allows the sound of the waves to wash over her.
She had dated John for eleven months. It had been the longest relationship she had ever been in. She didn't love him but she had never been in love and doubted she ever would and John was good in bed.
Janette’s phone buzzed and she picked it up to hear her crazy grandma shouting at her in Filipino.
She rolled her eyes, “I don’t speak Filipino, Grandma.”
“Disgrace to your heritage,” she hears her grandma say before she switches back to Filipino.
“Be over tomorrow.” She says and hangs up.
She spends the rest of the day moping on the beach and ignoring calls from her manager and so-called friends.
She gets to her grandma’s for dinner fifteen minutes late and her grandma smacks her on the head.
“How was your weekend?” Her mother asks sweetly.
Her mom had aged beautifully and she was thankful she got her looks, high cheekbones and deep brown eyes. She didn't really look Asian and most people figured she was Hispanic but she didn't much care what her race was.
She shrugged in response because she really couldn't remember, “I remember the first shot and then John breaking up with me.”
Her grandma started praying in Filipino and her mom shook her head, “You need a lifestyle change.”
Her mother said it every time they saw each other so Janette didn't know why this time was different but it was. “You’re right.” She whispered but they didn't hear and continued on with their dinner.
As she walked home she decided she was going to change. She had kind of been a party girl, never knowing where the next drink was coming from but always sure it was coming. Janette was tired, tired of ending up on the beach in tears. Janette was turning over a new leaf.
When she walked into her manager’s office the next morning it was with a refreshed spirit.
“Janette, where were you? I've been calling you for two days!” Her manager looked mad, like really mad.
