chapter twelve : samhain

"Crows sat calmly on branches, leaves shaking from non existent wind, and the bonfire grew and grew and grew and didn't stop until the flame hit the clouds, and the warning signs were so clear that even a blind man could see them, but Eve had always been great about ignoring the things most important."

EVE'S DRESS SWISHES AROUND HER body, and she pulls it up a bit by the thighs until her knees are free to be able to safely run.

Her gown is dark red, and made of the finest silk - thank you, dad, for having your own business - but it's cold, with spaghetti straps and it's long, reaching the ground - despite this, it's freezing outside. Late October in Scotland isn't something to play around in, and Eve shivers.

"You alright?" a boy says from behind her, and Eve turns to give Regulus a smile, trying to hide the clacking of her teeth.

(She also tries to hide the way she's blushing, because wow - Regulus Black in a muggle suit is very, very attractive.)

(Also, he doesn't look cold at all, with his pants and long sleeves, the prat.)

"Fine, thanks, Reg," she responds, but he doesn't look convinced - she can't blame him, she's not even convincing herself - and so he moves forward, taking his jacket off as he does, and then swings it over her shoulders. She tucks her head into the side of it to hide her grin.

"Please tell me we're almost there, I cannot watch this anymore," Barry says from behind them, and they all laugh. Eve determinedly does not look at the boy next to her, though she can feel his gaze burning the side of her head.

"It's just up ahead," Narcissa calls back; she's in the front and leading all of them, Lucius by her side. "Look -"

Eve gaped.

All her life, Eve had been told to keep out of the Forbidden Forest. Even before she went to Hogwarts, her parents had told her and James horror stories, tales about poisonous plants and terrible monsters and horrible creatures to keep them away. Evidently, it didn't work on James - everyone knew that he and his friends frequently ventured in to get ingredients for their prank potions - but it sure did work on Eve.

It had sucked, for a little Eve who had been looking forward to perform holiday rituals, because everyone knew that despite the Forbidden Forest being, well, Forbidden, it was also FULL of old, ancient magick. The forest had been around since the school was first founded so long ago, and it was said that the four founders had blessed it with their magick.

But Eve followed rules. So instead of going into the forest for rituals, or on old holidays, Eve contended herself with heading to the highest tower - to get as close to the moon as she could.
