chapter twenty-one : burning blood

"Pandora moved on to Eve's left arm, and let out a shaky breath as she performed the spell again, twisting Eve's arm around to make sure she got all of it off. Eve glanced down at her wrist; the bracelet Regulus had gifted her, with its white center bead, was now permanently stained a scarlet red."

EVE SNUCK BACK into Ravenclaw tower.

It was a bit childish, she knew, but seriously - if anyone deserved a break, she definitely did. So when everyone had trudged up the steps in the Slytherin common room - well, Narcissa and Regulus, both half asleep and injured, were floated up, but regardless - Eve had sat, for a long while, and stared into the fire.

It felt like not even that long ago, her and Regulus had been reading a letter from her parents in the flame light. If she focused, she could almost feel his arm against hers, a comforting weight against the words of parents who had never even bothered to know her.

Had that been real? Any of that? Had he meant all the things he left unsaid, the feather-soft cheek kisses, the comfort of her head on his shoulder? Had Bella meant the words she had whispered that night, the ideas she said that Eve could accomplish?

Eve wasn't sure. She wasn't sure about anything, at the moment, and she twisted her hands together. They were still sticky with red.

For the past six months, Eve had moved into the Slytherin dorms and shared a room with Narcissa. But she couldn't go up there, couldn't be surrounded by them, not now, so she slung her bag over her shoulder, tucked her wand behind her ear, and pushed open the wall, slipping into the dark hallway and slinking, slowly and silently, up stairs and behind passages until she arrived in front of the Ravenclaw door.

"Evelyn Potter, as I live and breathe!" the doorknob came to life, it's voice still joyful but hushed to an acceptable amount. "What can you break, even if you never pick it up or touch it?"

Eve moved closer to the door, out of the dim lighting and into the shadows. She winced as she answered, words clear on her tongue; "A promise."

The doorknob chortled, it's magic oblivious to how much it's riddle impacted her situation, and Eve scowled as the pathway opened.

She was quiet as she crept in, sticking close to the side of the wall and walking with light steps. It almost hurt to do; for the past months, Eve had been nothing but loud, with the presence of her friends by her side.
