chapter 7 : dinner with snakes

"Eve was this huge, impenetrable fortress, emotions locked tight, and here these Slytherins were; they came out of nowhere and broke in like she was made of paper."

"HEY," A FAMILIAR VOICE said as Eve stood up from the hospital bed she had been laying on.

She glance behind her, smiling softly at her new friend. "Hey, Cissa. What's up?"

Narcissa Black smiled back, walking over quickly to help Eve steady herself as she nearly fell down, legs still shaky.

"I just came to get you for dinner," Narcissa explained as they headed out the doors, waving in thanks to Madame Pomprey - or Poppy, as Eve called her. "Don't think I haven't noticed you not coming to the hall."

Eve chose not to ask how long Narcissa had been watching her, instead saying, "Well, I just ate in the kitchens. The elves make fantastic fudge."

"You'll have to take me some time," Narcissa said, waving to an older Slytherin boy they passed in the hallway. "Selwyn, when you are hosting tryouts?"

The boy, Selwyn, called over his shoulder, "Tell your cousin to ask herself!"

Narcissa cursed fluidly at him, and Eve let out a surprised laugh. To hear Narcissa Black, of all people, lose her seemingly endless composure over one comment, was unexpectedly funny.

Narcissa shot her a teasing smile. "Impressed?"

"With that vocabulary?" Eve raised an eyebrow. "Definitely."

They both laughed as they walked through the door. Eve twisted her ankle so she would be heading in the direction of the Ravenclaw table, but before she could even take a step, a small hand grabbed her wrist in a surprisingly tight grip.

Eve shot a questioning look to her friend; Narcissa rolled her eyes and tugged gently on her wrist, pulling her toward a separate table. "You're eating at my table," she said sternly, but her eyes were twinkling. "I sat at yours for breakfast, so now it's your turn."

Eve hesitated but let Narcissa pull her along all the same. "You're sure no one will mind?"

"They want to meet you," Narcissa assured.

Eve let her friend pull her to the green table. All the Slytherins she had observed were their usual spots; Bellatrix and Rodolphus at the top, then Andromeda, then Lucius, then Barry, and Regulus next to him. Narcissa slid onto her same spot; next to Lucius and across from Barry. Hesitantly, Eve sat next to her; she was across from Regulus.

"Hi," she said softly. Narcissa spooned a pile of food onto Eve's plate, muttering about underweight, forgetful girl, and Eve let out a laugh.
