"... the battlefield is a scary place especially if you're an amateur who doesn't know anything..."
- Dante De Luca.S C A R L E T T's P. O. V
I stumbled backwards, fear radiating off me without a second to spare. I blink the tears away, finally accepting the words that Theo said. My legs moved first before my mind could process the whole situation, running into the open road where little cars drove by.
I don't think twice running down the pathway on my left. Keep running! Theo's voice chimed in my head. My hands were fisted as tightly as they could be, pushing with all my might to create a distance but even that didn't take long. I drastically became tired and slowed down.
I couldn't help but groan at myself, annoyed that I got tired this quickly in this situation. Do not give up you loser! My mind taunted me. I tilted my head to the side disagreeing with the adjective to describe me. Nevertheless I continued pushing myself, testing my own limits.
I must've been running for a couple more minutes because I came to an abrupt stop, looking around my surroundings. I kept my lips parted gasping for air like a fish fighting for its life out of the water.
Whilst I was dying for air my eyes frantically looked around the dimly lit place. I place a hand on my hip, wincing as my stomach tightened from the pain. I licked my lips trying to keep them moist and from cracking. I let out a strangled gasp, my eyes fixated on something that I needed,
"Payphone... there's a... payphone here..."
I spoke breathlessly upon seeing one in sight. It was directly across me and on the verge of breaking down but that didn't matter. I finally found a payphone. I licked the corner of my lip, looking both ways seeing the place vacant and well away from the cafe.
I quickly jogged across the road, pushing down the pain and made it in seconds. Today was clearly not my day because I looked around myself, triple checking that no-one suspicious was around me.
Even though my heart wasn't content with the safety with the place I did what I was told. I stepped inside instantly smelling the dampness of the box. Once the door was closed it was only then when I smelt the lingering smell of pee around me making me gag.
It never ceased to amaze me even in my disgusting state as I still couldn't hide my fear, no matter hard I tried... but it was given right? I had the right to be scared. There were men looking for me with fucking guns... if anything I had the right to dissolve like how Iron Man died in Endgame.
I had that much under my human rights.
Not wanting to dwell on my sad real life state I shoved my hands inside my pocket and pulled out loose change. I managed to put the coins in one-by-one, waiting for the automated voice to tell me to punch in the numbers that I wanted to call.
Before it spoke I quickly pulled out the scrunched up paper and unfolded it, entering the numbers when the automated voice spoke,
"467... 672... 0108,"
I muttered as I punched in the numbers. Once the final number was placed it automatically began to ring. It rang a few times before someone picked up. My eyed widened and I couldn't help but blurt out the only thing that Theo told me to say,
"Code Rainbow!"
I was met with silence. The silence was too quiet that I ended up biting my nails, eyes still looking out for any suspicious people. Whoever was on the other side of the line clearly covered the mic saying something. I couldn't really hear anything but was still able to hear shuffling.
