A loud, high-pitched squeal broke in the room, when the couple on the screen shared their final kiss. Zon raised his eyes to his sister, now squeezing the pillow with awe. Was it really that necessary? He snorted and took his book down to see the last moments of the great confession.
The lovers looked into each other's eyes, as if they were the only people left on Earth, sweet words spoken with trembling voices. Of course the whole scene had to take place in the middle of the mall, right in front of a big audience. Zon's cynical expression was written all over his face; his eyebrows arched mockingly and his lips curved in a sneer. It was so unrealistic that he almost threw up.
'You were right, I was scared of my feelings,' said the main lead in an overly emotional tone. 'But now I'm ready to tell the whole world how I feel about you!'
'You're doing it already!' exclaimed someone for comedic effect, which made Zon cringe even more. It really was too much for him not to roll his eyes.
"Ugh, I can't believe you're watching such crap."
"It's romantic!" opposed Zol, sending him an irritated glare.
"No, it's not. Why do people in these kinds of movies always have to declare their love so openly? It's such bullshit and I would rather die than want to live through such a moment."
Zol huffed at him and stopped the DVD, ready to defend everything they saw. In terms of fierceness his sibling was on par. "It's because you're a heartless jerk!", she exclaimed and turned her body to him. Her lower lip was set in a childish pout and her nostrils flared angrily, but she tried to maintain her calm and look rather distant. Not that she could ever fool him. Or anyone else, for that matter. "You would understand it if you were ever in love. It's only natural that people want to show their affection."
"No, it's not."
"When people have someone, their heart sings," she continued, ignoring his laugh. "They feel so overwhelmed, they want to say it and show it to just everyone! I mean, what's the point if you can't?"
He shook his head, bemused. "You've read too many romance books, Zol. It's all a showoff. Not genuine at all." He moved on the couch to sit more comfortably and faced her. "All those characters confess in front of everyone, drawing attention to them. Why? Wouldn't it be enough if they say that only to their special someone? Would that change a thing? Make their feelings less?"
He couldn't believe that he got into such a discussion with his sister, but ever since he started a relationship with Saifah those kinds of scenes only started to irritate him more. Why did people want to be in the spotlight so much?
"Okay, I see your point," she admitted slowly. "But only about confessions. I still think it's nice to be loud about your love."
"Why?" He winced. "To rub it into other people's faces?"
"Duh! Why not?" Zol looked at him with disbelief.
"So people wouldn't talk?" he sneered. "Remember when everyone was laughing at Earth because he kept eating his girlfriend's face during every break? Why would I ever want that?"
Just that memory made him shiver. Every display of love was always drawing the attention of people and even simply holding hands or a kiss on the cheek resulted in some stares from strangers, which he would rather avoid.
"You're killing romance, Zon." Zol shook her head. "It's all because of guys like you that people have trust issues."
He blinked at her in shock. "A what now?! I'm just saying that it's enough to keep it private. It's a thing between two people, not the whole world."
