"Do you ever think about what sex is like? " Jack asked during lunch the following Monday. It was just so casually asked. I choked on my water. Alex began to guffaw.

"What sex is like? " Vic asked, coming to the table to  sit next to me. Andy was.... not here today. And that's probably a good thing, even if he is with Jack. "Why the interest?"

I choked more. "You've had it?! "

"Once, " He said, thinking. "Wait, you're all virgins? " His look of surprise was even more strange than the question.

There was a resounding nod between Alex and Jack. "Wow, " Vic said. "That's.... wow. "

"Hold up, you're not a virgin? " Alex asked me. Shit, I hadn't nodded. I also hadn't told them about my quickie with Kev.

"It's complicated. "

There was an uncomfortable shuffle to fill the silence that followed. I drank more of my water to hide my embarrassment. "Was he any good? " Vic asked. I spit out my water into the air.

"That's attractive, " Jack said sarcastically.

"It was a mistake, " I muttered. I drank more water to fill the space so I wouldn't have to answer.

"I'll bet that you were good, " Vic told me. A heat raced to my face. I swallowed all of the water at once, coughed for a long moment, and then recomposed myself.

"I don't know. "

Alex remained silent. Vic drummed his fingers on the table. What was he thinking about?

The rest of lunch held no conversation. In fact, the rest if the damn school day was completely lacking in conversation. Jack and Alex didn't even come to see me so we could walk to French class together.

Vic found out that I took French though, or at least I think that he did. Or maybe this wouldn't have happened:

After school, Vic caught up to keep walking with me. I was on my way to that coffee shop. "À mon avis, tu es très sexy.

" Je ne suis pas, " I responded mindlessly.  "Wait! "

He chuckled. "Just checking. "

"How did you know that I'd understand? "

"Sometimes, we don't realize that we know things. "

"Was it Andy? " I asked him.

"You already know that answer. But at least mine was with someone that I was actually in a relationship with, Mr. Fling. "

"Fair enough. "

"I never really got to talk to you much, but thank you. "

"For what? " I asked, confused.

"For forcing me to go to prom. It wasn't bad. And I think I would've regretted not going. "

"Oh, right. "

He pulled something out if his pocket. It was a small bracelet made of black beads. "Do you want it? "

"Did you make it? "

"Thrift store. "

I nodded, holding out my wrist. "Thanks." He slipped it on me. Honestly, I feel that this means more to me than that silly necklace. I turned my wrist around, admiring it for a moment.

"Did you really give up on paganism?" He asked me. It was a delicate subject, and the question was posed appropriately.

"For the time being," I shrugged. "I think that I just need to take a break from all of the rituals and things."

"So then you still believe?"

"Faith is," I thought for a bit, struggling to find a word, "complicated. It's hard to just stop believing in something."

"Right."

"Don't tell me that you want to call back Jaime or something."

"No! No! It's nothing like that. I was just curious. I prefer spirits to stay beyond the veil."

"I wish that I understood that," I sighed.

"Someday you might. Until then, I don't think that it's going to be much of an issue."

"I've been meaning to ask if we're actually together, or just friends with more-than-friends feelings."

"You haven't even taken me anywhere!"

"I took you dancing!"

"Ah yes, dancing." He got this faraway look in his eyes. "And you stepped on my toes twenty-three times that night."

"I never said that I was a good dancer."

"Then it's a good thing that you didn't try to twirl me."

I rolled my eyes. "It is a good thing indeed."

"But to answer your question, I think that we could be more than friends." He held up his finger. "BUT you can't go around preaching and dancing about it, okay?"

I nodded. "I promise."
