chapter 8: ice cold fury

    "Todoroki-san, can you form a splint with your ice? I broke my wing when I fell," Chiyo asks before she gently moves her broken wing. She hisses in pain, but continues to move it around until it was held normally. Shōto wordlessly does as he is asked, making Chiyo smile in relief.

  "Thank you. Are we headed towards the center or back to the entrance?" Chiyo asks walking next to the taller teenager.

  "Did you hear that loud crash? Someone else is here. I'm going towards the center. You probably can't do much, so it would be wise to go towards the entrance," Shōto says.

  Chiyo narrows her eyes at him and scowls. "I can do more than you probably think. Just because I am injured does not mean I am useless."

  "I didn't call you useless. I said you couldn't do much," Shōto states with furrowed eyebrows. The corvid girl blinks in surprise before sighing.

  "Apologies, the way you worded it made it sound insulting or belittling." Chiyo makes a weird noise when she loses her balance. Shōto instinctively catches her, pulling her close. Chiyo growls under her breath and finds her footing. This is just fantastic.

  "Unfortunately, I don't think I can make it to the entrance on my own. With my wing broken, I'm not balanced without help," She says, gripping Shōto's arm when she stumbles again.

  "Hm," Shōto acknowledges blandly. "Were you serious about letting your Quirk eat those villains? That isn't exactly heroic behavior."

  Chiyo laughs and gives the bi-color haired teenager a smile. "Grim doesn't like the taste of humans. We needed to gather information about this attack quickly and Grim can be terrifying when I am harmed or threatened."

  "Mmhmm. Logical ruse," Grimoire says, copying what Shōta had revealed the Quirk Apprehension Test was in his voice.

  "Grim, stay inside and conserve your energy. We don't know what is going on around us," Chiyo orders softly. Her Quirk pouts slightly, but nods his head and disappears back into his user.

  "I am also pretty sure freezing people and potentially leaving them to succumb to hypothermia isn't exactly heroic behavior either." She gives Shōto a small look with an amused smirk.

  When he doesn't say anything, Chiyo let's the conversation fade away. She focuses on their surroundings, eyes flicking back ind forth for any sudden movements.

  Chiyo almost collapses at the sudden nausea that hits her stomach when they reach the central plaza. She grips Shōto's arm, talons almost puncturing his skin.

  "Run. Chi, run!" Grimoire repeats, his screech louder than any of his earlier ones. Chiyo takes in a shaky breath, staring at the fight in the central plaza with wide–absolutely terrified–eyes. A giant black... monster was tightly locked around All Might. Katsuki was leaning over the mist man, a smoking hand on a metal guard around the mist man.

  "Oh–Oh my God... Is that–Is that the Nomu?" She asks quietly. "Where's–where is Aizawa-Sensei?"

  Shōto doesn't answer, but swiftly activates the right side of his Quirk. Ice travels towards the trapped hero and the Nomu, freezing the monster.

  "Ice? Young Todoroki!" All Might exclaims loudly, slightly in relief.

  "Grimoire!" The shadow demon bursts out of Chiyo with a loud screech. He flies forward and slices through the Nomu.

  "Chiyo-san!" Izuku exclaims in worry, staring at her wing with the ice splint around it.

  Chiyo gives him a small forced smile. "I'm alright, Midoriya-kun. Have you seen Fumi-chan?"

  "What a strange Quirk... pretty villainous..." A slouched man with messy light blue hair, pale skin, and manic red eyes comments to himself, scratching his neck. Chiyo bares her teeth and makes a loud aggressive noise from the back of her throat. She doesn't like the way he's staring at her.

  She focuses back on the Nomu when it starts to grow a lower half of its body. She pushes down the urge to throw up.

  "Get back, everyone!" All Might orders, holding his bleeding side. Chiyo didn't realize he was bleeding.

  "What? His Quirk wasn't Shock Absorption?" All Might questions to himself, shocked.

  "I didn't say that was all he had. This is his super-regeneration," The blue haired man mocks jovially. "Nomu has been modified to take you at 100%. He's a super-efficient human sandbag."

  The corvid girl releases Shōto's arm and mentally calls out for her Quirk. This is bad. This is really, really bad.

  "First, we need to get our gate back. Go Nomu," The man orders. Chiyo releases a breath and whips her head to stare at Katsuki.

  "Bakugō-kun!" She shouts in terror, spurring Grimoire to act. The Nomu was too fast.

  Chiyo gasps when a sudden gust of wind pushes her back. She lands in a roll and cries out when her broken wing hits the ground. The ice splint shatters.

  "Chi, Chi get up. You need to get up!" Grimoire whines in worry, pushing his user up. Chiyo whimpers in pain at the sudden movement and instinctively flexes her wings, sending sharp pains through her back.

  "–not know how to hold back?!" All Might's exclamation brings Chiyo back to what was happening. She uses Grimoire to slowly stand up, wing twisted up even more.

  "It was to rescue my companions. I had no choice! I mean, earlier... that plain-looking one. He was about to punch me with everything he had, you know. Violence for the sake of others makes it admirable. Isn't that right, hero?" The hand man mocks childishly before raising his arms.

  "You know what, All Might? I'm angry. I'm angry at this world that categorizes the same violent acts as heroic or villainous, deciding what's good and what's bad. 'Symbol of Peace'? Ha. You're just a device to repress violence. Violence only breeds violence. The world will know this once we kill you!" He continues, making Chiyo bark out a cold laugh.

  "You are fucking insane," Chiyo snarls angrily. "'The same violent acts'. They are not the same. You said it yourself. That is your 'gate'. To you, he will never be a human being. All Might-Sensei is protecting people with violence for the sake of protecting them as human beings! You say All Might-Sensei is just a device for the world to use. Maybe he is, but at least he's actually enacting change and fear. You, on the other hand, are just causing a simple temper tantrum, like a toddler, no one will remember once the next new supervillain pops up, only to be defeated."

  The man stares at the corvid girl in shock before slowly starting to laugh. The laughter soon becomes maniacal. It stops abruptly. Chiyo feels the world dissolve at the furious, ice cold glare the man gives her.

  "You've really made me angry... I think I'll kill you first, little raven."
