Luke winced as he took another step, every inch of him throbbing with pain. He could barely open his right eye, and he could taste his own blood on his tongue. Each step was more of a shuffle, his considerable limp slowing him down. It seemed as if he was barely making any progress, the lane seeming ten times as long as it had on the way up.
The small bag was shoved in his pocket - exactly where it had been on the way up - and it provided a not-so-pleasant reminder that Luke had failed to fulfill his part of the deal. He still had the drugs, and he didn't have one cent of the money. Granted, Rick hadn't enlightened him as to the size of the mess he was sending Luke into, either. Luke hoped this end of the argument would ensure he still got the ring. He wasn't going to let this black eye, split lip and possible cracked rib be in vain.
He dragged his feet along the path, forcing himself to continue making progress. As he hobbled along, another problem weaved itself into his brain. How in the name of God was he going to explain this to his parents? Jesus, if Ben wasn't suspicious already, he would be now. He could of course brush it off and say he got into a fight, but it wasn't likely that they would believe him. They knew him better than anybody, and they certainly knew he would be the last person to get into a fight.
Just as he began to fin his energy running out and his breathing laboured, Luke spotted the entrance to the car park. He desperately tried to quicken his pace, though a sharp stab of pain in his chest immediately rendered him immobile again. Impatiently, he huffed out a slow breath and once again began to move, at his tiresomely slow pace once again. He just wanted to go home and climb under his duvet and not resurface until everything was better - but that clearly wasn't an option for him.
Across the car park, the light from the shop could be seen shining from the front window. It was the only light in the vicinity, everything else swallowed by the darkness. It took him the best of 15 minutes to cross the car park, his steps getting shorter with each stride; his body wanting to succumb to the pain and exhaustion he was feeling.
Luke pushed the door open, and the bell rung above his head. He stumbled up to the front counter, grabbing the edge for support and allowing himself to rest his weight on it. His head snapped up when a voice cut across the shop.
"Jesus, could you have taken any lon- Oh."
Rick's sentence was cut short when he took in the sight of the boy in front of him. However, instead of looking surprised or concerned, as Luke expected him to, he wore a sly smirk, folding his arms across his chest.
"So, how'd it go?" he cooed, in a sing-song voice.
Luke glowered at him as best he could through his good eye.
"I think you know exactly how it went," he growled, his knuckles turning white as his grip on the ledge tightened.
Rick shrugged his shoulders.
"Meh, I probably should have told you that they can be a bit... difficult, at times," he spoke, "But then again, where's the fun in that?"
His wicked smile made Luke's stomach turn. Luke reached his hand into his pocket and threw the small plastic bag onto the counter.
"They weren't exactly pleased when I offered them this," he muttered, "and even less pleased when I asked for money. Now, give me my ring, you can sort this shit out for yourself."
Rick pursed his lips, then made a 'tut-tut' sound, shaking his head.
"Now, that wasn't the deal, was it?" he asked sarcastically, "The deal was, I get my money, you get your ring. But, it would appear that I haven't gotten my money.... You know what that means, don't you, Blondie?"
Luke scowled.
"It would also appear that you threw me right in the middle of a shit storm just because you didn't wanna do the dirty work yourself, and that wasn't part of the deal, either," he countered.
Rick laughed.
"I don't remember saying that it wouldn't involve getting beat off your ass, so technically I'm not in the wrong," he yawned, as if he was bored, "Perhaps if you weren't such a wimp you could have stood up for yourself a bit better."
Luke's blood was boiling, but he didn't have the energy to do anything about it.
"There was 4 of them," he spoke through clenched teeth, "I could have looked like the Rock circa 1990 and I still wouldn't have stood a chance. I just want my ring, and I think after everything I've just gone through that you should give it to me."
Rick laughed dryly, and Luke narrowed his eyes at him.
"Everything you've just gone through?!" Rick cackled incredulously, "Mate, that's nothing. Go home and take some aspirin and you'll be fine. Maybe ask your mommy to make you some cocoa and tuck you in, while you're at it. In fact, if you're really good, she might even buy that pretty little ring for you. Now, get out of my shop, you pathetic excuse of a boy."
Rick's tone had changed from patronising and condescending to bone-chilling within seconds, and Luke was in no position to argue. Sullenly, he turned around and limped towards the exit, stiff after standing still for the last few minutes.
"Don't let the door hit you on the way out," Rick taunted from behind him, and Luke stopped in his tracks, huffing out a breath, before continuing on, out the door and towards his mum's car. At this rate, he'd be lucky to drive the thing home safely.
He reached the car, letting himself in and shutting the door. And then, and only then, did he allow himself to break down.
