Exactly three hours later, K climbed into the 6 passenger spinner. Pruett sat next to the driver on the phone barking orders to some unfortunate underling on the other end of the line. K looked around, he would be accompanied on the drive by two bodyguards. As they lifted off, he noticed behind them was a backup vehicle. He guessed it probably had a couple of extra armed men inside.
The driver stared straight ahead, focused on his job and disinterested in his boss, K and the bodyguards. The two large and armed men that sat on either side of him were definitely human. He could just tell. He could see their holstered blasters, but what he found interesting was they were wearing flex armor. Flex armor was supposedly still in its experimental test phase. The LAPD was in talks with Wallace Industries to provide it to all officers, but it still had not gone through real world testing. K had not figured Pruett to be a customer of Niander Wallace, Wallace and his company were in direct competition with Pruett Mining and Manufacturing.
Pruett ended his call and turned to K, "Here is a map with the layout of the property. It's a big place so familiarize yourself with it. You need to know all the way in and out."
K took the map and gave a quick glance over to one of the bodyguards. "Is that Wallace flex armor?"
Something flared in Pruett's eyes then quickly passed. "You're familiar with flex armor? Isn't that a bit above your pay grade?"
"Older models on the force had the honor of testing it for Wallace and the LAPD. Survive the test, pardoned from retirement."
"That's a hell of a deal!" Pruett roared with laughter.
"Considering the alternative, it's a deal that would be hard to refuse." K said.
Pruett looked at the two men that sat on either side of K. "Unlike some of my fellow humans that border on neanderthal, I do not and can not elevate one form of life above another. Many do and that is probably a result of fear and insecurity but I have neither of those flaws."
"That is an interesting and uncommon world view." K wondered if Pruett was serious. Lots of wealthy people often held this lofty view the "all life is sacred" club. K just thought it was a way for them to show how different they were from the members of the uncivilized mob.
""It's a cruel world, isn't it Officer K?" Wallace's phone rang again and he turned away from K to answer it.
K sat back. Cruel was an understatement.
