Nollan's Introduction:
I'm waken up to the sound of my father banging on the door, he agressively swings my door open and shouts "Boy get the hell out of bed and go fetch some milk!" He then proceeds to slam the door behind him. My ears were ringing, yet they should be used to my father's yelling by now. My heart began pounding quickly and my mind was immediately filled with fearful thoughts of what my father would do as soon as I stepped out my bedroom door.
It hurts me to see him like this. Trash bin piling up with beer bottles, no happiness left in his heart. I remember how happy and cheerful he used to be, but now that my mother's gone it's like he's gone too. I quickly slipped on my torn up, old leather shoes and left without bothering to comb my hair back at all.
I ran down the old creaky stairs and entered the kitchen. The front door happens to be right by the kitchen table. My little sister Kiara had already awakened and taken a seat at the dusty old table to eat. She was eating a slice of bread with her head tilted far down. "Kiara why's your head down?" I ask her in a slightly aggravated both curious manner. "Nothing Nollan, just tired" Her voice trembled as she told me this. I noticed the entire time, her eyes were focusing behind me. I turned to see what she was so concentrated on but as soon as I turned around my father's hand whipped across my face. "I told you to hurry boy! now go on, Get!" But before I could say anything to stand up for myself he kicked my knees in, forcing me to trip and fall. I stood back up and firmly grabbed the doorknob trying to release some of my anger. I looked back at my father in disgust and anger as I opened the front door, proceeding to slam it behind me.
I hoped the fresh air would help me find some peace in mind but I couldn't stop thinking about poor Kiara. All I want to do is be able to protect her, and yet I still can't do that. I try to block out the awful memory of my father abusing her but it never leaves my mind.
I walked into the small grocery store then headed straight to the back of the store, where all the milk was being refrigerated. I grabbed the largest carton of milk so I wouldn't have to make another trip for a while, I don't think I can bare another morning like this...not for a while. I sped through the store with the heavy carton in my left hand, desperately trying to hurry to the register so I could make it back in time for Kiara.
All of a sudden I crashed into a blonde girl, causing us both to fall down. The carton slid about 5 feet away from my reach, luckily all the milk was still safely contained in the carton. I picked myself back up and dusted myself off then I offered the young lady my hand to help her up. We gazed into each-others eyes for a short moment and she gripped my hand to help her get back up. Her hair had gorgeous waves and her eyes sparkled like a shooting star. "s-sorry I didn't see you coming" the young lady spoke in a soft angelic voice. "No really it was my fault I- uhh wasn't paying attention" but as I was trying to apologize I reminded myself of Kiara waiting for my return. "Look I'm in a hurry can we meet at the park around 9am tomorrow morning?" after I asked the question, she nervously nodded her head and spoke "oh uh okay, see you tomorrow" she slightly smiled as we both waved to each-other. I then quickly picked up the carton of milk off the hard tiled floor and payed at the register. After exiting the grocery store I ran back home, as quickly as possible.
When I arrived back home I was relieved to hear no yelling, just complete silence. This meant that father was taking a nap. I slowly turned the knob on the front door then tiptoed my way in. I slowly shut the door, trying to stay as quiet as possible. I didn't want to test my theory of what could happen if I were to wake up my father. I then took a seat by Kiara at the kitchen table, she was sketching pictures of rabbits, she told me that they made her feel safe in a way. Of course I am the only one she's told of this secret and I plan to keep it well hidden, it's something that she finds peace in and I wouldn't want to risk ruining that for her. "Father drank himself to sleep again" Kiara spoke in an annoyed whisper. I roll my eyes in response "Of course he did. Well since he's asleep, Wanna go on a short walk?" Kiara nodded her head and we quietly snuck out of the house.
We walked to the park and stood among our favorite bridge. When mother was alive, she took us to this bridge with father every morning. While watching the calm river flow and listening to the birds chirp in the trees Kiara spoke... "Why is father like this? he's changed so much." Kiara spoke in a both sad and worried voice. I couldn't give her an answer, All I could do was agree. "I know Kiara, it's like he's become a different person." my little sister gives a slight nod "yeah...I miss mom Nollan." What she had said hurt me, I could feel her pain as well. "I miss her too." I sighed and we headed back home.
Luckily father was still asleep when we arrived, this gave us time to collect the empty beer bottles off the floor. After quietly picking up the beer bottles and taking them out to the trash, I made two ham and cheese sandwiches for our lunch.
Then after me and Kiara ate our lunch we parted ways and went to our separate bedrooms. My bedroom had one window, one small and very old dresser, and an old bed with white sheets, one feather pillow, and a cross-stitced pillowcase my mother made for me when I was little.
I sat down on my bed and took out my worn out blank-paged notebook. I liked writing poems, it helped me make peace with my mind. Poems helped me express how I truly felt inside but in a beautiful way. I could sit on my bed and write poems for hours. This time I wrote about hope, longing to find someone that could return my happiness.
After a few hours of writing, the sun began to set. My father still had not waken to feed me and Kiara dinner so I read a few chapters of my favorite book and went to sleep.Nollan's appearance:
