I wake to the sound of my phones alarm beeping in my ear. I groan as I lean over to grab my phone off my nightstand. I want to throw my phone across my room when I see the time. 5:45. I haven't slept well since I came out of my coma. Dreams of ghostly figures haunt my dreams. I know two of them are Luke and Sidney, but the rest are faceless shadows. I click off the alarm and set it back down. I flop back into my bed sigh. School. I don't remember ever going to school but the very word fills me with dread.
I reluctantly swing my feet off the side off my warm luxurious bed and stand up. I shiver as the cold air hits me. I look longingly back at me bed, practically hearing it calling me back to it. Shaking my head, I walk over to my bathroom so I can start my shower.(30 minutes later.)
I slip on my fuzzy white robe and wrap my wet hair into a plush white towel that feels much more like a blanket as I walk out of my bathroom and into my closet.
Okay. First day of school. Have to look good. My heart is racing with nervousness. I run my hands through the beautiful clothes hanging in my closet.
Yesterday, when I had asked Sidney about school clothing shopping, she had assured me she had stocked my closet with the most up to date teen fashion.
I bite my thumbnail nervously as I look at all the outfits. I have no idea what to wear.
I nearly jump out of my skin when I hear Sidney's voice behind me.
"Need some help?"
I spin around to see Sidney leaning against the door frame wearing a pair of baggy grey sweatpants and a hot pink tank top, her eyes still glazed from sleep.
"Su-sure." I stutter, appalled by her willingness to help me.
She rubs her eyes and walks over to the rack of clothes. It's quiet for a minute while she skims her hand over the clothes stopping every couple of seconds before moving on. Forty five minutes later I'm standing in front of a full length mirror wearing a black strapless crop top that zips up the front and a pair of light washed low rise mini shorts.
Sidney looks at me approvingly, her blue eyes glowing. "You clean up nicely."
After Sidney had picked out my outfit she insisted on doing my hair and makeup too.
I slowly turn in a circle and admire myself. I decide I like the way Sidney made me look. My long blond hair is perfectly straightened and my aqua eyes are stand out thanks to the black winged eyeliner, the shimmering beige and brown eyeshadow and the lengthening mascara on my eyelashes. Sidney had also sweeped blush over my cheekbones putting color in my pale face. I smile at the girl in the mirror. I liked her so she will stay. "Thank you Sidney. Really." I turn and see her smiling at me.
"No problem. I had fun- Oh! I forgot something!" She suddenly ran out of the room. "I'll be right back, don't move!" Her voice ringing down the hallway.
Seconds later she returned carrying a pair of black stilettos. "These are for you!" She grinned and held them out to me. "I ordered a pair of these a month ago but they sent me the wrong size and I couldn't return them so here."
I'm shocked by her today. Complete and totally appalled.
I reach out taking them from her and slipping them on my feet. "Perfect fit."
Sidney claps her hands together. "Good now hurry up and get down stairs your going to miss the bus! I'm going back to bed so I'll see you when you get home."
I glance at the phone and nearly have a heart attack. I'm going to miss the bus.
"Oh shit! See you later." I grab my bag and walk as fast as my heels can take me down the stairs.
I pull open the heavy oak front door and step into the blistering heat of Georgia. I can see heat coming up from the blacktop. The sound of a big yellow school bus rattling down the street and stopping at the end of the drive pulls my attention away from the heat.
Here we go. I square my shoulders and walk confidently toward the bus, my heels clicking on the asphalt.
As soon as I step on the bus I begin to sweat. It's even hotter than outside.
I know something is wrong when I don't hear anything. Aren't buses supposed to be loud? I casually look up to see every eye on me and my heart jumps into my throat. I swallow it back and give them all my best flirtatious smile.
Im walking down the isle looking for a seat when two girls whispering loudly in the back catch my attention.
There both dyed blond, tan and outrageously gorgeous. I hate them immediately.
"Oh my god, who is she?" Dyed blond number one asks eyeing me.
"I heard she's the cousin on the rich bitch." Dyed blond number two throws her head back and laughs. "Poor thing."
Blondie number one giggles. "The one from Michigan? No wonder she so pale and sickly looking."
They both break out in laughter. I don't know when I decided to do this but a second later I'm stalking over to them with a fake smile plastered on my face. "Hey can I sit with you?"
I watch as the color drains from their faces. Blondie number twos face is filled with horror as she looks up at me. "Oh shit." She mutters
Blondie number one puts a obviously forced smile on her face. "Sure!" Her voice is slightly squeaky like she's lying.
I sit down next to her and put my bag down at my feet. Just as I do the bus jolts into motion.
"My names Britney Gold but you can call me Brit." Her smiles is sickening.
"Thanks. I'm Kylie Darling." I flip my hair over my shoulder and dare her with my eyes to say something rude.
Britney hits her friend on the shoulder a gestures toward me.
"Oh yeah! I'm Lily! You can call me Lil." she smiled.
"Hey." I smile back.
"So is it really true your from Michigan?" Questions Britney, her brown eyes squinting at me.
"Yeah." I clasp my hands in my lap so they can't see them shaking.
They both give me an expectant look. "And..." Says Lily. "Was it cold or what?"
I bite my lip. I had no idea what the weather was like up there. I can't remember Michigan at all. "Yeah it was really cold." I simply say.
Britney groans and shakes her head. "You have to give us the details honey!"
"I-I-" I stammer unsure what to say when Britney suddenly grabs my wrist and flips it over revealing an ugly scar from the accident.
"What the hell is this?" She exclaims causing every eye to turn on us.
I pull my arm out of her iron grip and tuck it against my chest.
"I was in a car accident..." I begin but am interrupted by Britney laughter.
"No fucking way! It can't be true! Oh but it is though, you have amnesia. I heard about you! Rumors have been going around for months about the 'girl of should have died'! That's what they called you on the news. Did you know that? You're practically a celebrity, except you know, you're not pretty." The whole bus is filled with laughter. And they're all laughing at me. Why are they laughing its not funny.
"What's so funny?" I whisper afraid if I talk to loud my voice will crack.
"What's so funny? You are darling! You're obviously faking your amnesia, and everyone knows. Everybody knows amnesia isn't real, people just pretend to have it to get sympathy. So how about that Amnesia Girl? Are you faking it?"
I'm nearly in tears when the bus finally pulls into the school. "You know what?" I say as I swing my bag over my shoulder. "Southerners are bitches!" I push people aside to be the first one off the bus. I stumble off and blink in the blinding sunlight. I see the school about 10 yards away. I quickly push through the throng of sweaty teenagers and through the open doors of the school.
This year is going to be a bitch.
