Leaving

I wake up to the sound of my door opening. I groggily blink raising my hand to shield my eyes from the light. I think back to my dream last night and groan. I really need to stop making it a habit of passing out all the time, like seriously? What's up with that!
Rebecca stands in the doorway with a tray of food in her hands.
"Wake up sunshine!" She sings. "Breakfast is served!" She swoops in and places the tray on my plain white nightstand.
I groan and roll over. "I am so sick of hospital food!" I growl. "I want a cheeseburger."
Rebecca just laughs. "Don't worry you're leaving today anyway."
I sit up so fast I see black spots. "What did you say?" I ask barley able to contain my excitement.
Rebecca claps her hands together her eyes sparkling like diamonds. "Yes! You're leaving!" She squeals.
I jump out of my bed my feet hitting the cold floor. "Oh my god! Oh my god!" I scream as I'm jumping up and down in able to contain my excitement. I suddenly stop a feeling of dread creeping up my spine. "Will I be living alone?" My voice quivers.
Rebecca doesn't seem to notice my sudden change in mood she's still beaming.
"Of course not silly! You'll be living with Sidney!..." She keeps talking but I'm not listening anymore. My head spins as I try to wrap my head around my situation. Sidney? The same Sidney that came here yesterday? I mentally scold myself. Of course it's the same Sidney!
"Kylie are you listening?" Rebecca's voice snaps me out of it.
Heat creeps up my face in embarrassment. "Umm no." I answer guiltily.
Rebecca sighs. "Sidney's coming to pick you up in an hour so I suggest you get ready." She gestures to a stack of clothes and a makeup bag on the cushioned chair that wasn't there when I fell asleep.
"Do you know who brought that in?" I ask, pointing at the clothes.
She shrugs. "Maybe Sidney left them yesterday? I'll leave you to get changed." She practically skips out of the room.
For a long time I just stare at the clothes but eventually curiously bring me to get up and look at them.
I pluck a note of the top of the pile.
KYLIE,
THESE ARE SOME THINGS I THOUGHT YOU WOULD LOOK GOOD IN.
-LUKE
My breath catches as I read his name. No. Fucking. Way.
I slip of my hospital gown then reach down and grab a white crop top from the top of the pile, pulling it over the top of my head. It fit perfect. I then picked up a pair of light washed high waisted short shorts and pulled them on too. Perfect fit as expected. I pull on a black pair of vans sitting next to the pile of clothes and smile. No more walking around barefooted.
I grab the makeup bag and walk over to the mirror in my bathroom. When I'm in the middle of putting my makeup on I freeze. This feels so natural so familiar, putting on my makeup. Like I've been doing it forever. I probably have. I smile at myself in the mirror. At least my body remembers something.
When I'm finished straightening my hair with the straightener I found in the makeup bag, I walk out of my room and to Rebecca's desk. I frown when I see who's standing there. Sidney. I glare at the back of her head as I walk up.
As I get closer it sounds like they're talking about my medication.
"Make sure she takes this every morning." Says Rebecca.
Sidney nods and smiles. "Of course."
I clear my throat and they both turn and look at me.
"You got everythin'? Asks Sidney.
I narrow my eyes. "It's not like I have anything to take with me." I feel the irony in what I'm saying, the weight of the bag with the makeup and clothes Luke left for me heavy on my shoulder.
Sidney sighs and gives me an annoyed look. "I have you're medication so let's go." She walks away toward the elevator and presses the down button.
I look over at Rebecca who's almost in tears. "Don't be sad Becca, i-I'll text you. Okay?"
She sniffs and wipes her nose on her sleeve. "Okay. Come in for lots of check ups though!" She laughs "I'll miss you. You are like my only friend here."
I laugh and hug her. "Same." She hugs me back but abruptly lets go when Sidney yells for me to get a move on.
"Bye Becca!" I yell as I jog toward the elevator.
Sidney's impatiently holding the door open for me. "Get it!" She snaps her cherry red lips twisting into a snarl.
I glare at her as I get in, making sure to move as far away as possible in the small elevator. We start moving down and I feel a little thrill that this is my first step toward freedom, but a darker thought creeps in my mind. What if this is my first step into something much worse than the hospital. I glance over at Sidney and confirm my own suspicions.
Shes giving me a look that could kill. I quickly look away and my nails suddenly become very interesting.
The elevator suddenly dings and I rush to take my first step out of this hell hole.
