Trigger warning: Use of homophobic slur.

"Joey! Joey! Joey!" I heard Charles scream as he jumped up and down on my bed.

"Ugh, what do you want!" I hissed back, rubbing my eyes.

"You have to get up!"He almost howled, "Up! Up! Up!"

"And why do I have to do that?" I questioned.

"Because Mom told me to wake you up!" He screamed, "She said 'Charles go wake up your brother, he'll be late.'." He mocked her, moving his hands like a mouth. For a ten-year-old he sure was sassy.

"Damnit!" I yelled.

"You Just swo-"

"I know, I know! Just get out of my room!" I retorted.

And with that, he went running up the stairs screaming.

I quickly threw some clothes on and ran out the door.

I finally made it to the school, I hadn't noticed this before but my locker was close to George's.

"Woah man you look like shit!" He snorted.

"Thanks, you do too." I glared.

I shut my locker and heard him chuckling as I walked away. God, it was the second day of school and I already hate it.

I sat in the Fourth hour, tapping the pencil resting in between my fingers on the desk. I glanced over to see two football players snickering at a girl and her friend.

... Not a friend? I'm not so sure.

"Fag asses" The one boy spat.

"We're hot, aren't we? It's a shame you can't keep it in your pants." The one girl chuckled.

"What'd you say?" He whined.

"You heard me, unless... you didn't? either way, it's not my problem." She replied.

The bell had gone off and the guys went back to their seats. Great of course they had to sit just behind me.

"What're you looking at?" The same guy from before challenged.

"Just a homophobe, that's all, "I replied, shit why did I say that? what was I thinking?

"Oh, you think you're so smart, gay ass?" He teased, I wasn't having it.

"First of all, I'm not gay, and even if I was, why would it matter? I have gay friends, and what about it? I have non-binary friends as well, but that shouldn't even matter. Get your giant football, hot-headed head out of your ass, and stop being a damn idiot."

I did not just say that! oh no no no no no no, Why did I say that?! I had this burning feeling in my chest that made its way into my throat, seeping onto my tongue out of m mouth/ I loved Isa with all of my heart, we have been such a good friend that I couldn't just stay quiet, I think that's why I said something.

"I-" He stuttered, "Now wait a minute-"

I just turned around and saw the girls snickering t him before both turning to me and giving me a look of thanks.

I finished up my first two classes of the day before heading to lunch where I was greeted by the gang, It felt nice seeing all of their faces, all except one...

•••••

Lunch was short today and so was my last class. We planned on all meeting outside of the school building before getting ice cream.

We decided on who would go in whose car, Boys in my car, girls in Isa's. Levi was forced into the front with me, while the kids sat in the back. They goofed off the whole time while my head was set straight forward. My jaw was clenched and my knuckles turning white from my tight grip on the wheel.

We parked in the parking lot of the strip mall and made our way to the ice cream shop.

We found a quiet area to the side of the pastel-colored shop, sharing what we got.

"George don't spill!" Johnny screamed, "Fuck!"

"Oops?" was all George seemed to get out.

Allan chuckled along with the rest of us. I glanced over at Levi and noticed his timidness, he wasn't like this last year, even when we were feuding. Did something happen over the summer? Even if something did, I would surely be the last person to know.

We finished up our dessert and Mindy suggested we go shopping for school supplies, and then I added on that we all go to my house for homework.

"Oh yeah, good idea Joey! Your room is the best to hang out in," Isa chimed.

"Hehe I try," was all I said.

•••••

It was later in the night, we were all scattered across my room, helping each other out with different problems.

I was helping Isa and George on my bed, while Joyce helped Alan and Mindy on the floor, all wrapped in blankets, and Johnny and Levi sat in the corner on a Heep of bean bags.

It was only later that I realized how sleepy everyone had been, I suggested ending the night and everyone agreed.

"Moms pickin me up," Alan said, "Anyone need a ride?"

"Oh, and I can take a couple people too!" Isa had mentioned.

"I'm all good," Levi sighed, "My dad is coming,"

"Isa? Me and George'll head off with you," Mindy had chimed.

"I'll take the rest then!" Alan noted.

And with that, all of them were gone, all but Levi...
