I looked around for Sally and John. I had to find them before something bad happened. I tried listening for them but all I could hear was the fight around me. I couldn't take it. I killed someone, there's a massive battle raging on around me and I couldn't find my few friends. I felt helpless, like I was falling into an endless pit but then I heard it.
"DAPHNE!"
John was crying my name into the battlefield with all the strength he could muster.
"WE'RE OVER HERE DAPHNE, SALLY'S WITH ME!"
I got up, my hope renewed hearing John's voice. I ran in the direction of his voice dodging people as they swung at me.
"John! I'm coming to you, stay where you are!"
I kept running in their direction and after almost being shot I finally found them. I was so happy to see that my friends, Sally and John were still alive. I ran up to them and gave them a hug.
"We need to get out of here. Let's go to the bush, then from there we can get our bearings and find my house." John said.
"But what about the other miners? What will happen to them? We need to help them, now that we're together and know that we're all safe we can fight!"
"Daphne." Sally said softly. "We can fight another day. Right now we need to hide somewhere so that we can plan what we do next."
"That's.... actually quite smart. I can't find any way to argue against that. Well, let's go then."
We all nodded and started trying to find the fastest way to the forest. We looked at the hotel for a reference to find what direction to go. We found an opening and made a dash for it, dodging blows and tripping traps on the way. At one point a trap tried to grab John so I hit him in the face with my shotgun and then loaded him full of lead.
After around ten minutes of running, dodging and pushing we finally made it to the edge of the battle. We saw that traps were starting to surround the fight and we couldn't let that happen. I cried out to everyone around me.
"THE TRAPS ARE TRYING TO SURROUND US!!! DON'T LET THEM DO IT!! ESCAPE THE FIGHT! PASS THE MESSAGE ON!!!!"
We ran away from the battle and heard our message being repeated. We were proud of ourselves, we warned all the others of the traps surrounding them and hopefully helped lots of people escape by doing so. We ran into the nearby bush through a gap in the traps, they tried to follow us but we didn't let them. We weaved right and left through trees dodging bullets and shooting back when we could. When we were running I saw a bullet hit the tree right in between me and Sally, it terrified me and drove me to run even faster. I grabbed John and Sally hands and then bolted through the trees, by the time I looked back the traps were out of sight.
"We can't get cocky yet, they might still be around." I puffed while catching my breath.
"We need to double back."
"Ok, then we can run to our left for a kilometre and then go home." Sally wheezed
I looked a John expecting him to say something but saw him collapsed on the ground huffing.
"Maybe we should take a small break, John needs it." I said.
We took a five minute break keeping a tight watch on the area as we did so. Once John was ready we followed our small plan and doubled back, we then jogged a kilometre to our left and then looked for the exit of the bush. We saw an opening in the trees and through that we saw that the trees were thinning so we walked that way until we reached the end of the forest. We saw that we were by the river that Sally and I first panned at and from that landmark we walked home.
Once we reached the house we all walked in, we had a silent agreement to relax and gain our bearings before we planned. after around half an hour John called us to the living room and started talking to us about the plan.
"We gotta think of a plan to help all the miners."
