Complicated

“Okay, let’s go,” I told John, closing the door behind me. John was waiting for me by my door, looking as gorgeous as ever. He was in a white shirt, black skinny tie, red jacket, black skinny jeans and red hightops. After we had finished our session this morning, we spent some time together and later I went home to shower and get changed into something nice, as John said we would be going to somewhere special. I was wearing one of my favorite tops which was a black shirt with a ruffled neckline, a brown coat, beige skirt and some boots.
John took my hand and we got into his car. On the way, we passed the area I followed John to the other night, where the pubs were.
“John,” I suddenly thought of something that I still had not figured out, “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure,” John seemed to be in a very good mood today, “You can ask me anything baby.”
“I’m wondering why you acted so weird before when we were together,” I said, looking at him, “After helping that little boy? And that old lady? You became strangely quiet afterwards.”
“Oh,” John pulled his eyebrows together, “You have to know you’re an amazing girl, (Yn), the best person I’ve ever met.”
“Sure,” I sighed, “But you’re not answering my question.”
“You know I had been with so many girls before and I still consider myself a bad guy,” he said, smiling, “I still think you shouldn’t be with me.”
“Are you trying to ditch me?”
“I will never ever do that unless you don’t want me – and that’s still not going to happen as it will be you who’s ditching me,”
“Get to the point John,”
“Okay…” he sighed, “Those girls were just some random girls who got drunk every night and hooked on some random guys… Like me. I got so drunk sometimes and I wasn’t even sure what I had done.
“And I don’t deserve to have such a perfect girlfriend. Or even just a friend like you. Not in a million years. So when I saw you being so kind, I just felt so sad. I blamed myself for having such bad history. I wished I could go back and delete all my past. And I wanted you to go away so bad. I just didn’t want to hurt you. But I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I hated myself so much…”
“John,” I grabbed his hand, and he looked straight on the road, “Don’t say that. Everything happens for a reason.” I thought of my reason of coming here. If he did not do all these… I would not be here.
“I hope you were right,” he said, “I just feel so bad for doing this. You really deserve someone way better.”
“You’re perfect,” I said, “For me.”
John smiled small, and I leaned over to peck his cheek. He turned his head for a brief moment to kiss my lips.
We arrived outside a restaurant at last. John came over to my side to open the door for me, and I kissed his jaw when I got out. He wrapped his arm around my waist and we walked towards the restaurant.
From the outside, it was just any other ordinary restaurant, but with three or four stories. But once we stepped inside, I could not stop glancing around. It was decorated like a theater, and there was even a stage at the center. There were even balconies above us, which happened to be private booths. But it was not like the old-fashioned theaters; it was very modern with different colors of lights. To be exact, it was like a club version of a theater. Jazz music was playing in the background though.
Everything about the decoration seemed to have nothing in common, but it was so relaxing and full of harmony here. Just like me and John, who knew I would fall for this boy? He needed help and I was an angel, for crying out loud!
The waitress led us to the upper level, to a private both which was just to the right of the stage. We could see the whole ground floor clearly from here.
Throughout the dinner, we talked and laughed like we were in our own world. We even did not pay attention to the singer and musicians on the stage when they came out. I had never been this happy before. Until someone new occupied the balcony right next to us, and I was the only one who could see who those people were, as John’s back was facing that balcony.
It was Kyle, and I believed the man he was with was Jimmy. He was a middle-aged man with little hair. He was a bit plump, too. Kyle’s seat was facing in my direction. I hung my head low, trying to avoid him. But then John put his hand under my chin and made me look at him.
“What’s wrong, (Yn)?” John asked, concerned.
“Nothing,” I replied too quickly, and I darted a glance at Kyle, who had spotted me. I regretted what I had just done immediately, as John had caught me looking over his back.
John looked back, and he recognized Kyle, “It’s him again!”
“Don’t mind him,” I said.
“Of course, why would I?” John dropped his hand, and continued eating.
“Are you mad?” I asked after a few silent minutes.
“No,”
“Then why aren’t you speaking?”
“Because you didn’t speak,”
“Come on, John, that’s not the reason,”
John sighed, “Okay, I really don’t like having him here,”
“We can finish this quickly and go to somewhere else,”
John stayed silent for a couple of seconds, then glanced at Kyle, who was looking at us from behind his menu. John then smiled cheekily at me and raised his fork to my mouth, which contained the last bit of his food. I instantly understood what he was trying to do. He knew Kyle liked me and he was trying to make him jealous.
I opened my mouth and let John feed me. I swallowed it and said, “John, you’re really bad, I have to agree on that one,” I joked.
“When you mentioned not being kissed by anybody and he’s ‘kind of’ your ex… I reckon he’s not really your boyfriend, he just nearly became your boyfriend, so that won’t possibly hurt him much, will it?”
“You did pay attention,”
“Yeah, when it comes to you,” John smiled at me like an angel.
I blushed, and John chuckled.
At last we stood up and were ready to leave. I saw Kyle tell the man opposite to him something. When me and John walked out of the restaurant, hand in hand, someone called behind us.
“(Yn)!” it was Kyle.
I turned around unwillingly, clutching John’s hand tighter.
“Hi, Kyle,” I said casually.
Kyle looked at our linked hands. He furrowed his eyebrows.
“(Yn), I need to talk to you,” Kyle looked at me, “Now.”
“Sorry, Kyle, it’s not a good time right now…” I replied, and looked at John. He was expressionless.
“Please, just for a minute,” Kyle begged.
“(Yn),” John spoke, “I’ll wait for you in the car.”
John released my hand and walked towards his car.
“Wait—” I tried to grab his arm, but Kyle pulled my arm.
“Hey!” I protested.
“Sorry!” Kyle said, “I really need to talk to you.”
“So what is it?”
“Are you doing this for your purpose of being here?”
“Does it matter to you?”
“You don’t have to do this to help him. Try some other methods,” Kyle said softly.
“Well, Kyle,” I said, slowly, “We ARE really together. I do love John.”
Shock crossed his face, “How could you! You aren’t supposed to be attracted to the human here!”
“I know, but Kyle, it’s really none of your business,”
“(Yn)! Do you know what you’re doing?”
“I know,”
“Then don’t do it!”
“I can’t!” I threw my hands in the air, “I will take care of this. I know what I’m doing. Please, Kyle, don’t interfere, okay?”
“But—”
“Just don’t”
“Okay…” Kyle said, looking disappointed, “But at least give me your number, please? It seems like you’re not planning to call me. And I want you to know that I love you too.”
“Kyle…” I began, “I’m sorry for what I’ve done to you. But I just… Can’t be with you anymore. I love John. More than anything.”
“You’re going to go back one day,”
“But John’s going to go there one day too! I will make him a good person,”
“Can we meet again?”
“Uh, Kyle,” I glanced at John, and he was looking at us emotionlessly, “I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“It’s because of him, isn’t it?” Kyle said, raising his voice a bit.
“Sorry,”
Kyle stayed silent for a bit, trying to calm down.
“At least give me your number,” Kyle said, “I don’t want to lose a friend. Having someone who understands here is nice.”
“That’s alright, I guess,” so I entered my number into his phone.
“Okay, bye, (Yn),” Kyle grabbed me into an unexpected hug. I did not hug him back, as John was watching.
“Bye,” I replied, and Kyle disappeared into the restaurant.
I went back to John, anxious for what I was about to face in the car.
