We soon docked the land of the island and began a walk up the beach.

I walked slightly behind him, our fingers still weaved together.

I didn't know what to expect here, especially with the grievance energy Asra had on him.

The smell of the island was ashy and the aura was uncomfortable.

Charred trees creaked in gloomy breezes.

The sky was abnormally red too, as red as blood and the eyes of the people who died from the plague.

I could feel Asra's magic washing over me and mixing with mine in a protection spell.

He only puts a protection when the area we're at is dangerous.

But there was nothing here but ashes and trees.

"This is the Lazaret." He said.

I could feel the heaviness of death as soon as he said that word.

"Yeah, isn't this where all the people who died of the plague were cremated?"

Asra looked away, pulling a broken compass from his bag. "...Yeah."

We walked farther through the despaired land until he stopped, looking at his feet as the compass needle spun out of control.

My brows furrowed.

Asra took a breath. "And this is..."

He paused then fell to his knees, digging his fingers into the sandy soil.

"Asra-" I reached out for him.

"This is where I found you..."

I stood in surprise at his shaky voice.

"Asra, I..."

"The reason you lost all your memories three years ago was because you died of the red plague. You ran from me and made sure I wouldn't see you die. I couldn't help you, there was nothing I could do."

I gasped.

Memories were suddenly hurling back to me as if his words triggered it.

Getting sick, leaving Asra, slowly dying, it all came back in fuzzy visions.

My head pounded and I felt dizzy.

And then It was gone.

No memory of it anymore.

But I understood.

And I was starstruck.

"They threw your ashes here like you were nothing but another victim. I still remember the feeling of your bone fragments between my fingers as I stuffed your ashes into my bag."

Asra lifted his head to me and I could see he was sobbing.

His tears sparkled in the moonlight.

These tears had been shed before, I could tell.

"That was the worst night of my life."

I sat down on my knees in front of him and grabbed his hands in mine.

"I took you back and made a deal with The Devil to bring you back. And that was the best night of my life. Seeing you again. "

"You what...?"

Making a deal like that with the Devil was forbidden to any magician.

That was the first rule Asra ever taught me.

"I gave up half of my heart to bring you back and... And it was the best decision of my life. When you came back you looked exactly the same, you even had the same scars you always had." He said, smiling between tears. "I left so often because I was afraid to see you hurt again."
