"One, two, three-"

I held the small gold shot glass to my lips and poured the foul tasting cure down my throat, trying my best not to taste it too deeply.

We each took the shot of the cure, downing it in one swallow and coughing wildly as it burned our throats.

I placed one hand over my throat to ease the pain with some magic and the other hand over my mouth to stop from coughing and gagging.

"Ugh...!" I hacked with a raspy voice. "What the..."

"Ugh, I'm sorry, I didn't have any flavoring left." Julian heaved. "Probably should've mixed ours with the wine.

I felt the medicine wash over me like a shot too many of moonshine and I immediately leaned against Asra.

I felt a quick jolt of energy and as soon as it came, a brick to my face that nearly knocked me out completely.

Asra helped me regain my balance but then fell to his knees onto the grass.

"Faex. This is strong." Asra said as I helped him up.

"It will wear off eventually." Julian said. "Now you see why we used to inject it and not... drink it."

Nadia and Portia lied themselves down on the grass so they didn't collapse, looking up into the stars and conversing quietly amongst them.

Muriel, who stood behind us, began to sway.

Asra and I locked our arms within his then gently helped him to sit down on the grass.

Julian's eye rolled into the back of his head and he fell straight down onto the ground, like an old tower knocked down by the heavy storm wind.

"Julian-" I shouted over to him. "Are you okay?"

He groaned, struggling to lift himself up on his forearms and run his fingers through his hair.

"I'm okay."

"Don't scare me like that." I sighed as Asra's head fell onto my shoulder.

I looked down at Asra, then back up at Julian as he lied himself back down on the ground.

"When will this... wear... off...?" I said, dozing off onto the grass.

Suddenly, a huge jounce of energy bursted through my body and I sprung upright.

My blood suddenly ran hot and I felt invulnerable.

Everyone else began to sit up as well.

"I'll fix that side-effect." Julian said as he stood up and dusted himself off.

Nadia's guards brought out a table with a fancy tablecloth lined with gold.

Wine glasses sat in rows all over the tables.

Portia and Nadia filled the glasses with Golden Goose, Julian worked on fixing the cure medicine, Muriel made sure no one else came into or out of the palace, and Asra and I went into the rooms with the guards telling people to start leaving the masquerade.

The wine glasses filled with the white wine had just finished being mixed with the cure as the guests began to funnel out.

One by one they took a glass of the cure and drank it happily.

Not one of them failed to take a final glass.

The plan had worked perfectly and seamlessly.

No panic was raised, half of the guests attending were cured and immune.
