“Robin,” Ella said, “come here.”

A large man, tall and broad shouldered, in a perfectly tailored, navy suit, peeled out of the shadows and knelt by her side.

“Yes Mistress?”

“You are to assist our guest with her business while she stays with us, and to ensure that she is comfortable.”

“Yes Mistress.”

“Good boy.”

Robin rose and walked to where Luci was watching from the bar, enjoying the delicious cocktail. Cocktails were not common in Valhalla and Luci loved the rich honey wine of the mead as much as the next warrior, but when in Midgard there were novelties to be savoured. Ella and Luci had agreed the next step; information gathering. This would require a visit to the casino. Having rested well in one of the bedrooms kept for guests of Ella, Luci was impatient to be moving, but fate cannot be rushed and the casino was not open for the evening just yet.

Robin bowed his head slightly to Luci and then straightened up, flashing a cheeky smile. His obedience was clearly to his mistress.

“Would you like to change?” Robin asked the valkyrie, who was back in her leather jacket, tight leather jeans, and the low cut top she wore as standard. Luci looked down at herself and considered it momentarily, but shook her head. Without her shield she felt that some armour was necessary, even if a fight was not expected.

“No. Thank you.”

Robin shrugged and checked his watch.

“Suit yourself. The casino will open soon, anyway. Let me know when you’re ready to head out.”

As they had a little bit of time Luci sipped her cocktail and smiled, letting the heat of her slowly growing hunger reach her eyes and shimmer across the gap between them. Robin met her gaze directly and smiled back, but it was only a normal smile. Luci was confused, nothing? Really? Her invitations never normally failed to arouse interest at least. She slid from her seat and looked up at him, placing one small hand on his broad chest and pouring a little more charm into the look.

“Ah. Um.” He looked away, then back, gently taking her hand and removing it from his chest. “I’m, not interested, thank you.” The Siren chuckled at Luci’s confusion as she watched from across the club, dealing with some bit of business or another.

“You’re not gay, though.” It wasn’t a question, he wouldn’t be in Ella’s thrall if that was the case.

“No. I’m just, not interested in sex.”

“So why are you here, with her?” He was clearly devoted to the siren, totally enchanted, and that kind of magic only invited people who could be interested, unless the mythic was particularly powerful, and even then it was short-lived. Robin’s face softened, melting into an expression of total bliss.

“She’s so beautiful, my heart aches to be near her.” That Luci could understand. The siren invited love as well as lust, where a succubus' power was rooted in lust, in pure desire. At a nod from Ella, Robin explained.

“There’s a word for it,” Robin explained. “I’m Ace. Asexual. But I'm not aromantic, I still fall in love. She loves that I adore her and never asks for more. When my time here is over, when she sends me away, I hope that I can find someone like her again.” He checked his watch again.

“Let’s walk,” said Luci. “And you can tell me more, why would she send you away?”

As they followed the darkening streets through the city to the Three Diamond Casino, Robin explained the unusual set up at the club. While he didn’t understand the metaphysics, the magic of it, Luci could piece it together. While there was dancing at the weekend, during the week Ella would sing to her patrons, who filled the club every night. Her siren voice irresistible to the humans who gathered to listen, unknowingly enchanted by real magic, to a spell of beauty, love, and loss woven anew each evening. Some would be so taken with her and beg for an audience with the elegant hostess after the show. Those that had nothing to leave behind, a very few, stayed a while as part of her court. This was considered unorthodox even in mythical circles, but not unheard of, and as long as she allowed them to return to their lives when they chose to it was tolerated. If Ella were to keep them too long, however, they’d become too deeply enchanted and would pine away if they returned to their human lives. So Ella watched for signs that those she cared for were elf struck and, at that point, she would set them up with enough to begin their life anew, becoming a beautiful spell that they had lived for a time, a dream-like memory of wonder to warm their hearts in the cruel world outside. Until that time, however, they belonged to her, as surely as the Valkyrie’s belonged to Woden. Where Woden liked his warriors free, Ella liked her court obedient and willing to serve. She allowed only those who would be happy serving to stay.

Robin was one who loved to serve.
