I sat across from him in a little booth that was in a the traditional "50's style diner". Ryan and I talked for a while. I learned useless information about how he didn't actually want to become a cop at all, in fact he wanted to become a vet and take care of animals and do stuff like that.
"But anyways," he took a sip from his milkshake, "Why do you need the DNA testing? Is it for a case?"
"Yes." I looked him in the eye and then back to my coffee.
I tried the entire time we were here to avoid this conversation. I didn't even tell my best friend about the note.
"Come on. I'm a cop too. I can tell you're lying." He smiled.
"Detective." I mumbled.
I looked down at my coffee and then back up at him. He had one eyebrow raised and I realized how snobbish that sounded.
"Sorry." I paused, "But I'm not lying."
"Yes you are. Come on you can tell me."
"I'm not." I let out a fake laugh.
Why was he pushing? Why did he want to know so bad?
"Come on, something must have happened." His face dropped and now a little bit of anger was visible.
"Nothing did and I'm not lying." I laughed again but my tone was laced with anger.
"Tell me!" He screamed.
I must have looked like a deer caught in the headlights I was so shocked. He ran a hand through his hair and let out a small chuckle.
"Im sorry. I didn't mean to do that." He said softly.
I nodded and looked away. My eye caught on to the TV in the corner. A news anchor talking and a picture of a body being pulled out of a lake flashed across the screen.
"Excuse me." I said as I stood up walking towards the barista. "Can you turn it up?" I pointed to the screen.
"Yeah sure!" She took the remote and clicked it a few times.
"A body has been found in Burnham Harbor in Northerly Island Park. Deputies believe it to be local radio star Jasmine Tomms. Chief Andrews! Are we sure it's Miss Jasmine Tomms? Was she murdered?"
On the screen the camera shifted revealing the chief . He had a thick black jacket on and was cleanly shaved. He had bags under his eyes and his voice was rough.
"What happened to him?" I thought.
"We aren't sure who the victim is just yet. We will be testing DNA and will release it when the time comes. It appears the victim may have been murdered" He said cooly.
"Chief! Some people think there's a serial killer in Chicago. Is that true? Are the people in Chicago in danger, chief?"
Christopher stood there thinking for a minute before speaking again.
"We are not sure if there is or there isn't. We believe the cases may be linked but we will give the information out when it's ready. That's going to be all." He said, then tipped his hat and walked back to the crime scene.
"Well you heard it folks. Chief Christopher Andrews and his-"
I quickly turned around and went back to the table.
"What's going on?" Ryan asked.
"I have to go." I said and laid down a ten dollar bill before heading out.
