It's been a decade since I've come back and forth near the shore. My parents had been against it— me going to the shore, but they cannot interefere as it was what the old oracle had said I should do. And I want to continue doing it until she returns. As I hear something honk, I figured that it was her. As I've figured, she was now sixteen— her hair was now in a faded blue color with a pink seashell hair clip on the side as her hair had cascaded down to her waist. She sat on one of the stones, with a distant expression as she started to sing.
"Since you've been gone,
I have been standing alone all day
Since you've been gone
I have been wishing for old days
Will days come back?"Her voice was as mesmerizing as ever but instead of happiness, her voice was laced with longing and sadness. This made me sad, thinking of things running on my mind simultaneously. And it made me want to ask her.
What's your name?
But I can't go to the shore without either scaring her or drying off. But I still ventured closer to her, just near the large rocks that were enought to cover my figure and watched like a silly schoolboy watching the girl he likes.
She had now risen from where she sat and went near the ocean's waves, letting them touch her now-bare feet, burying them slightly with the sand. I watched as a sad smile engulfed her face as I had heard her heart rate rise up (my ears are kinda sensitive) as she had started to bawl out her hidden tears. She was sad. And filled with loneliness.
And I knew how that felt.
And with just a small distance closer, a man that seemes in his late fifties— still looking young had approached her, patting her back, as if reassuring her that she'll be fine. She's not, though. But as I had looked at her, I felt his gaze on me— I stared back, not wanting to back down a staring contest. But what surprised me was he gave me a small bow, enough for me to know he bowed and not have her to see past the action.
He is a merman.

Was it her?
