I was drawn to her.

My heart smiles upon hearing her melodic voice travel along the waves, so being the curious one of the bunch, I followed it, and it lead me to a small boat unlike the other boats I've seen. It wasn't fishermen, there were no hooks and nets, instead, in the middle of the small boat was a table— and people. They were chatting happily, like they were there to have fun.

"Mommy, why don't we cook fish when we go here?"

It was her.

The little girl. Her voice filled with a melody that only merfolk can recognize. "Of course, we can't! Fish are their friends, they can keep them as pets. And seeing us eat them would make the merfolk really sad." I stilled upon hearing her mother's voice. The familiar timbre, the sweetly melodic tune. The mother was a mermaid. "Oh." The little girl giggles as she walked to the edge of the boat and started to sing.

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete
Wouldn't uou think I'm the girl
The girl who has everything?

Her voice held a melody that I cannot decipher. Hers were like a mermaid's but it had something else in it. She sounded happy and that was enough to draw a smile on my lips as she continued to sing.

When's it my turn?
Wouldn't I love
Love to explore things that's not here above?
Under the sea, wish I could be
Part of that world

And as if the heavens heard her voice, the clouds began to show streaks of gray as I began to worry. The family may have noticed it and had been doing their best to be calm and not show signs of panic to scare her and started to steer away to shallow waters to avoid the storm.

"Mommy, what's happening?"
"There's a storm, sweetie. We must get to shore for safety."
"Oh. So, we'll be pos— postponing the beach meal?"
"Yes, dear. Now, wear the life vest."

But they weren't prepared. Large waves stirred the ocean, toppling them upside down without a warning. The waves swirled around, whooshing as the wind screamed and I knew that the family is bound do die.

I was fond of the girl, so I went to see her for the last time. But what I didn't expect was to see her mother struggling to breath as she had given up her immortality to the young girl, making her lose her magic— and her life. Before she had closed her eyes, she looked at me.

Take care of her. Your highness.

I saved her. Brought her ashore and waited for her to wake up. As she was taken away by people wearing all white, the waves thundered and swirled, as if they do not want her away. But one thing is for sure.

For you, I will wait.
