Michael

There was a small breeze hanging around the deck of Jean's Dinner, a steaming cup of coffee in front of me. I was lost in watching all the locals walk the streets, catching up with all their friends and families, and the nosy church ladies spreading around the local gossip. It was only a few hours ago that I landed in New York but after a very suspicious phone call from my Pop, I am now waiting back in Beacon Falls after a train ride. Abby is at home babysitting both herself and Tabby while I deal with everything. The sound of a chair moving across the wooden deck had me take my eyes of the streets and pay attention to the man taking a seat beside me. My dad auburn hair, round face, the ugly goatee he always wanted to grow and the glasses I inherited from him, to my own luck I only need them when I am reading documents.

"Thank you for coming to meet me" He said, pulling his chair closer to the table however the belly might be in the way.

"I didn't do it for you!" I said folding my arms across my chest. "You said you wanted to clear the air about something regarding us?"

"I see, right to the point" He whispered under his breath. He was staring at the foot of the table, suspecting I didn't hear him.

"Pop, what do you expect me to say? It great to see you! You look great! No, I had a great life after you chased me away!" Sarcasm was not my best quality but then again Abby was starting to rub off on me.

"I understand, and I don't expect your forgiveness or anything!"

"Then don't. I have given up on the whole family reunion thing I always imagined after a few years on my own and if last time was any indication, I was right to let go of that hope" I saw my Pop wince at the mere mention of the encounter in the diner last time.

"When you were a little boy, you were carefree and always spoke your mind but you always kept trying to impress us instead of being yourself. In High School I though you would break out that habit but you were always a determined boy, never allowing anyone stand in your way of what you wanted. Then when I found out you were gay it was like everything made sense, why you were always so intent to make us proud but I reacted badly." I didn't know what to say instead I wiped a stray tear falling down my cheek.

"I tried everything to change her mind but when I found out what happened it was to late. The day I lost you was the day I lost all my children and it kills me a little everyday"

"You say that but how can I believe you, you didn't even stand up for us on anything. Sarah and I were always the problem children compared to Brian!" It was true. Brian could nothing wrong in Mom eyes, if Sarah and I even attempted something minor we were bad mouthed until we felt like we were nothing but crap!

"That's because she didn't know how to treat you two, it's always been difficult for her."

"What are you talking about?" I asked,

"A year after Brian was born, we sort of had a break from each other. I met a woman at work and we dated for a few months while your mother had her fun with the local fireman. When we finally reconciled, Elaine informed me that she was pregnant with you and Sarah."

"What?" I whispered, shocked to my very core.

"Elaine and I came to an agreement that she will raise you until you were ready for us to meet but there was a complication during your birth. Sarah was first and all so beautiful when she came out. You were a little more different. You had your umbilical cord wrapped around you when they got you out. No heartbeat, no scream, just this blue little baby. Your mom had a small seizure from the panic of seeing you. She died before they got you breathing." Tears were flowing down my cheek. I had a mother who actually wanted me, who cared so much about me that she couldn't handle the though of me not breathing!
