She stepped through the door of the shop, grimacing slightly as the bell attached to the door rang piercingly, announcing that somebody had come in.

"Hello young lady, how can I help you today?"

Cryonics gave a small smile to the kindly-looking old shopkeeper who stood behind the counter. "Oh, I don't think I'll need any help. I'll just look around."

The lady smiled back before returning to her computer. Cryonics let the smile slide off her face and wandered through the store, looking at various microwave dinners and bottles of water. She finally picked up a container of microwave soba, and nodding to herself, subtly slipped it into the pocket of her hoodie. She took three more and brought them over to the counter, a small amount of guilt squirming in her stomach. She always felt bad when she stole from kind people just doing their jobs, but she knew she wouldn't have enough to pay for all four sobas.

Shaking her head a bit to clear her expression of shame, she gave a smile to the lady behind the counter. "I think I just need these."

The woman glanced at her selections before typing something into the computer. "Right... Three sobas, that'll be $11.99." (Just FYI, I know that this is Japan and they don't use US currency, but this is what I'll be doing throughout this story. also, I have no idea how much microwave soba costs, or even if it exists. bear with me here.)

Cryonics felt the easygoing smile slide off her face again. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a total of 11 wrinkled dollars. She tried to brighten her expression again, and made eye contact with the woman. "I, um, I'm sorry, I'll only be buying to of these then."

The woman held her eyes for a moment before letting out a sigh. "Oh, you poor dear. Tell you what, the man that came in before you tipped me a dollar, so just give me what you have and you can take your soba."

Cryonics blinked in surprise. "But... no, I really shouldn't-"

The lady shook her head, a smile gracing her wrinkled face. "I insist, young lady. You look like you could use some meat on those bones."

Cryonics felt herself brighten. "Thank you so much."

On her way out of the store, Cryonics slipped the stolen soba out of her pocket and back onto the shelf where it'd come from. Whether she needed it or not, she couldn't steal from this lady.

(in case I wrote this too confusingly, Cryonics was going to buy three sobas and steal one. Then the lady was nice to her, so she put the stolen soba back because she felt bad. This wasn't really an action-y chapter, it was more of a little short to help with my cruddy character development.)
