- this takes place in modern times, and all the wars that happened on Earth also happened in this AU, and they live in America -

Shadow was walking around in the forest, enjoying the peacefulness of the birds and the wind, when he suddenly heard a large crack.

"Who's there?" He asked to the sound. Just then, a Small blue hedgehog Shadow had never seen before peeked out from a tree. Now, Shadow was never the type to be attracted to people, but this kid was an exception! His big, curious green eyes, his confident posture. He had everything that Shadow liked in person.

"Pardon," He said, walking towards me. "But I'm afraid I've lost my way. Could you care to point me towards Frog Lagoon?"

"Wow, you must be really lost, 'cause Frog Lagoon actually dried up 50 years ago." Shadow said in a matter-of-fact way, and couldn't help but snicker.

"Strange, because I so vividly remember visiting the Lagoon just last month." He looked at me, and his eyes widened. "Oh, how dreadfully impolite of me! You may call me Sonic."

Shadow thought it was strange how Sonic spoke, almost old-timey; but it was kind of cute in his opinion. He was kind of cute...

"Oh - um, I'm Shadow." He said quickly when he noticed that sonic was looking for his name.

"Well, pleasure to meet you, Shadow!" Sonic said, holding out his hand. Shadow took it. "Could you direct me to the nearest town, please?" Shadow could do one better, and he told Sonic he would take him there himself, since he was already heading back. They got to know each other as they walked, and the more Shadow learned a out Sonic, the more he though something was up. When Shadow asked Sonic why he was lost, he said this:

"Well, I'd needed to come into town to collect food for our animals."

"So you live on a farm?" Shadow asked.

"Well, yes, I believe that's quite common."

"Yeah, during the Civil War, maybe."

"Well, I was certainly not alive back in 1865." Their conversation was cut short, because they made it into town.

"Such strange architecture." Sonic muttered as they passed houses.

"Yeah, okay. Well, I need to get going. But I'll see you tomorrow?" Shadow said, starting to leave.

"I'll be here." Sonic said. "And thank you for helping me!"

The next day, Shadow went into the same part of the woods to see if Sonic was still there, and sure enough, he was.

"Hey Sonic."

"Hello, Shadow!" Sonic said from his seat on an old stump. Shadow had been thinking a lot about Sonic and how he acted strangely, and wanted to ask him about it (and also maybe ask him out).

"Hey, Sonic, can I ask you a question?" Shadow said, leaning up against a tree hear where Sonic was sitting at.

"Of course."

"Who's the president?" Sonic laughed.

"What kind of a question is that?"

"Just answer, please." And so Sonic correctly named the president.

"Okay, and who was the president right before?" Sonic looked slightly confused, but answered anyways:

"Well, FDR(a.n. Franklin D. Roosevelt), of course." Shadow wondered if he had heard that right.

"Franklin D. Roosevelt? Sonic, he was the president over 50 years ago." Sonic chucked warily.

"That's funny. Look, I've been thinking too-"

"No, Sonic; i'm not joking. I-i think something may be wrong with you." Shadow said. Gears were turning in his head, but he couldn't quite put the pieces together. He was interrupted by Sonic saying:

"Shadow, that's delusional." And more firmly:

"But I have something to say too, okay?" Shadow was a bit angry that Sonic was glossing over such an important fact, but he let Sonic speak.

"Shadow, I have to say, I've only known you for a little bit, but it feels like it's been years. And, I think... I've fallen for you." It was like nothing else mattered at that moment; all of Shadow's fears faded away. Shadow chucked a bit.

"I think I have too." He said. He could feel them leaning in until their lips touched. It felt like heaven on Earth. They kissed until they couldn't feel themselves, Shadow forgot all about his troubles, and at that moment, everything was perfect.

[Around the same time]

Rouge the Bat walked into the graveyard, wearing a black dress and holding flowers. She set them down on a certain gravestone. It was her best friend, Shadow's. About a month ago, he was found dead in his room holding a bloody knife and a suicide note.

Sure, Shadow's life wasn't perfect, Rouge thought.

But did he have to leave all of his friends like this?

She sets the flowers on the grave and exits the graveyard, but takes a quick glance at another gravestone close to Shadow's.
