Taylor Martinez was a police officer in New York City, twenty-eight years old and single. She did her job well, though the male officers often thought that she would have been better to get another job and leave the heavy work to them. Taylor did no such thing.
She loved her job. There was only one problem. She wasn't trusted by the people she helped. She was African-American. This had caused her a lot of problems. People were so prejudiced sometimes.

Taylor was driving back from the Police Station late one night for her break, because she had had a busy day's work.

She nodded. "I'll go and start now. I should have been gone fifteen minutes ago."
"HOLY COW, YOU SHOULD HAVE. OFF YOU GO."
Taylor stifled a giggle. He was so loud, yet so inexpressive.
She went off in the police car, leaving her own behind.
The beat was as normal as a beat can get. Taylor saw two young teens trying to set some trash on fire, and got out.
"Hey kids, you're not supposed to do that, you know," Taylor pointed out.
The smaller teen, a girl, fled. The boy faced her defiantly.
"And?"
"'And' since it's forbidden, you don't do it, okay?"
He looked sullenly at her. Taylor sighed inwardly.
"Where do you live?"
He remained silent,
