Chapter Two

~~ ~~

Sawyer was taken back by the woman in front of him, never had he met such a spitfire. Her spirit matched her fiery red hair, her brown eyes shone with a challenge. He found himself smiling like an idiot because of her.

"I am not sure what you find amusing sir" she spoke again "However I suppose if you won't let me go back home you can take me back to my brother's wagon."

He nodded and lifted her with ease to the saddle. She looked slightly confused but didn't say anything, so he walked next to his horse as he led it back to the wagons at least a mile away by now. It was quiet and much to his surprise Miss Pennington didn't say another word, instead she looked ahead of her, her thoughts clearly elsewhere.

The dust kicked up in the air. And he cleared his throat to get Miss Pennington's attention. She jumped slightly and looked around her "We're towards the back of the wagon's sir." She stated. he carefully made his way towards Miss Pennington's family.

"Coop," a slender man with brown hair said as soon as he saw her "Where on earth have you been?"

"Honestly Andrew" Miss Pennington replied, "You have no manners. Aren't you going to introduce yourself to my rescuer?"

"Sir, I apologize for anything my sister did... or said." He said looking to her with a scolding look one normally got from a parent. He lifted her from the saddle and mumbled that it was no problem at all.

"Coop get back in the wagon with Ella and Jacob" he said sternly before turning his attention back to Sawyer "I'm Andrew Pennington," he said with his hand held out.

"Sawyer West," he retuned the gesture.

"Thank you for bringing my sister back." He said sincerely.

"Really it was no trouble" Sawyer stated before climbing atop his horse. He tipped his hat before leaving. He wondered what it would be like to have siblings. Having grown up an only child he never encountered that kind of relationship.

He went back to work, he made his way ahead from the wagons, but his thoughts remained on the young lady behind him. She was beautiful to be sure, but it was more than that, it was her spunk. She was different than anyone he'd ever met before. He knew he had to come up with a way to see her again.

He would just have to keep a better eye on the wagons, he was sure she would make another escape- she seemed to have set her mind to it. But why she didn't want to go was beyond him. most everyone looked forward to new beginnings, to the rich sole, to the opportunities ahead. She seemed to prefer the overcrowded state of Missouri.

It was nearly a week before he saw her again. This time she walked with another girl and a few younger boys. Her family he thought as he directed his horse towards her. She wore a bonnet atop her head that shielded her face from the sun- and from his view. But she must have seen him approached as she stopped walking and looked straight at him.

"Mr. West," she said once he was close enough to hear her "I assure you I still don't need rescued."

He smiled at that "Miss Pennington," he greeted "How are you today?"

She pushed her bonnet back and he was able to see her face, she smiled at him before speaking again "This is my dear Friend Ella" she introduced the other girl who she walked with "and these are my brothers Harley, and Jake"

He nodded and introduced himself.

"You see my brother has no trust in me, I must be accompanied at all times by nearly my entire family"
