I woke up in a big, empty apartment with a blanket over me and I was wearing new, clean clothes. "Where am I?" I searched my body for any scratches or bites on me, clean skin again.
"You were very lucky fellow runner".
"Who said that?" I asked curiously, I looked round to see who was talking. It was a young man, looked like in he was in his teen years.
"Who are you?" he just looked out the window, ignoring my question. I got out of bed and walked towards him.
"I asked you a question dude, who are..." I went to touch his shoulder, he quickly grabbed my hand.
"My name is... Rahim, I'm a professional runner" I looked at him in confusion "You look pretty young to be a professional runner" he just chuckled.
"You have a lot to learn, my friend" a doctor then walked in, I hoped I wasn't infected "How is our patient today?" the doctor sat me down and shined his light in my eyes.
"So am I infected? somehow?" the doctor just continued his work on me.
"How did you managed to walk through a sea of infected, and not get a single scratch on you?" I thought about on how to answer his question. "I covered myself, in... zombie guts" Rahim and the doctor looked at each other.
The doctor finished his work wrote down notes. "Well you have nothing wrong with you" that was something I liked hearing "How did you that would work?" Rahim said while just pacing back and forth, "Well, I... I honestly have no idea, it just came to my head".
They both looked confused, I then remembered about my brother and Michelle, I wondered if they were here.
"Hey; do you guys have a guy named Dwight Hakes or Michelle Swanely here?" Rahim then faced me, "I don't believe so dude, why? who are they?".
Dwight is my brother, he went out on a supply search without me this morning. and Michelle is a friend" "Well, you best speck to the boss, he might know" I got up of the chair and walked with Rahim to the boss.
"So what is this place?".
"This place? it's called the Tower it's the safest place to be.
People do go out now and then, suppliers, trap layers, rescuers and people who just want to stretch their legs".
"How many you have here?".
"I lose count, we gain some and lose some".
"How many of these people are... infected?" Rahim stopped in his tracks; I hoped I didn't say the wrong thing.
"We had many people who got infected, but we treated them and saved thirty one" "You saved thirty one people; from becoming the leaving dead?" I was surprised to hear about it, it sounded impossible but I believed him.
"Who was the last one?" "His name was Kyle Crane, my sister Jade saved him. But we lost one of our runners, I blame him for it, but he is being useful for now.
Which reminds me; I need to see how he is doing, he is setting up traps far from here. Go and see the boss. he's on floor nineteen"
Rahim walked off, leaving me to find the boss, who ever he is.
I found an elevator to go to the nineteenth floor.
Just as I was waiting for the elevator to reach my floor, I heard two guys talking, and couldn't help but over hear. "Hey, have you heard about thirty one? He has only been awake here for half a day and already Rahim is starting to like him". "I don't think so, he's just earning his trust, very slowly".
The elevator doors closed and I went up towards the nineteenth floor, I then stopped at the seventeenth floor, a young lady steps inside the elevator, she notices who I am and seemed unsure about me "Your that guy who covered himself in zombie guts", I sighed, "Hey; I'm sorry to sound rude, but that's all I know about you. and I think it's very... interesting".
"I'm Jade by the way" now I finally got to meet Rahim's sister, she looked beautiful, but I wasn't going to try anything.
"Your Rahim's sister; I met your brother already, nice guy" Jade rolled her eyes, "Yeah, he can be".
"I'm heading towards the Boss, is he nice?".
"Didn't Rahim tell you? he's not here; he went out to get a supply drop and took a few runners with him".
"Shit, so now what?".
"Well, you could get settled here if you want. or you could head on your way. it's up to you" I had a small thought on my mind, should I stay here for a while or go and find Dwight and Michelle.
Just when we got to the nineteenth floor I quickly asked Jade if she has seen my brother or my friend, she hasn't seen then either, "I think i'll stay here for a little while. then I have to find my brother and friend".
Jade then walked off and I still went to the nineteenth floor, no idea why.
While heading to the nineteenth floor, I got to some thinking. 'If there is a cure, what would happen if I get my hands on it?' Greed started to come to my mind, I tried not to think about it. I wasn't going to let my stupidity get in the way of my survival.
I reached the nineteenth floor, and thought I would look around, see what I got myself into, "This place could have something to hide, because in an apocalypse, people will have anything to hide. People can lose more than their minds.
"Hey dude, you looking for something?" A guy saw me at the end of a hallway, "No, I'm just getting used to my surroundings".
The guy just took no notice of me, so I continued to walked around.
Until I came across a room that had 'Headquarters' written on the wall, I had a small thought, maybe there could be something I could use to help me survive, on my own. I need to find my brother and my friend, Michelle. Even though The Tower is a safe place, I'm a little concerned. Dwight once told me 'Be careful with trust, this world is hard to start trusting'.
If he was here, he would most likely want to stay for a few days and then head out.
Trusting people in this world now, is very difficult, people lose their minds and they would do anything to anyone.
I didn't know if I could trust these people, so I decided to have a quick look around "A small look and i'm out".
I was taking a risk that could mean I would be killed or beaten or even thrown out. Or worse all three. I slowly opened the door and peeked inside, no one in sight, yet.
I sneaked around the room, searching for anything that looks like anything I could use to survive I then heard footsteps heading towards me so I quickly rushed out of the room, but then stopped outside the door and peeked around the door, someone with a bandage around his head and blood on his cheek, he was in a bad mood.
I saw a chance to get out of the room unseen, a women showed up behind him, she looked like a medic. and talked to him, I ran out of the room, quickly. They didn't seem to see me, hopefully.
I made my way back to the room I woke up in, my room. Passing many people with the look of guilt. I knew I did a bad thing, I tried to steal from other living survivors. I had to decide if I should stay or leave. I have good reasons for both decisions, but which one is the best one? If I leave, I might not last long, I would have died last night if it wasn't for the Boss's men.
Dwight and Michelle could find this place, or they could be in trouble or dead. I was so confused, so I decided to sleep on it. Hoping i'll have an answer by tomorrow.
