"What was that?" Hanna jumped onto Cece's lap and Aria cuddled up next to Spencer. It was around nine p.m. and the girls were sitting around the campfire, well almost all the girls. Alison had gone to the restroom and Emily accompanied her, using the buddy system.
"It's probably Ali, you know how she is, she loves a good scare" Spencer tried reassuring everyone, but she herself was feeling scared.
Another branch snapped, this time closer than than where rustling was heard earlier.
"What's wrong guys?" Alison asked, she had come from the opposite end of where the noise had come from.
"There's s-something there" Hanna pointed into the dark opening of the trees.
"I'm sure it's noth-" the sound of more rustling was heard.
"Heyya" a man, who looked to be around his late thirty's appeared startling the girls. "Sorry for scaring you" he laughed nervously. He wore a red and black checkered flannel paired with light blue ripped jeans and black shoes.
"I-it's fine" Alison smiled a tight lipped smile, feeling off. Something about this man didn't sit right with her, the whole vibe he gave off made her feel uneasy.
"Is there something you needed?" Emily spoke, stepping slightly in front of everyone in a protective manor.
"Right, yes!" He nodded. "My car broke down a few miles back—"he used his thumb to point behind himself "—and I was hopefully looking to borrow a phone?" He asked nervously, looking everywhere but at the girls.
"Here's mine" Emily passed him her phone, she also felt uneasy. It was just so strange. She looked at him once more, this time studying every detail. He had blood on his hand.
"Hello..yes..yeah these girls helped me...yeah, bye" she listened to the conversation, feeling odd about the way he said girls instead of just saying someone helped him, what had it mattered that they were girls.
"Thank you" he handed Emily back her phone. "So what's a group of beautiful woman like yourselves doing out here all alone?" He smirked. Something about his smirk made them all feel sick.
"We're not alone" Aria quickly piped up.
"Yeah, our uncles are in the cabin" Hanna added.
He hummed in response.
"Hurt yourself?" Emily nodded towards his hands that were covered in blood.
"Oh this? It's nothing." He rubbed his hand on his shirt, removing most of the blood. "I just fell on my way over here" he looked over his shoulder. "Gotta be careful out here, don't know what's lurking in the dark" he added.
Emily and Cece knew being out in the wilderness meant animals of all sorts, so before they left, they grabbed their switch blades. Something their military father made sure they always kept on them, he always said the world outside their home was dangerous, and it should never be trusted.
Emily griped the knife tightly, ready to use it at any moment in case something went wrong.
"I'd better get going" the man said after an awkward silence. "Thank you again" he turned around and walked back into the direction he had come from.
Emily let out a breath she didn't even know she was holding. Her grip on the knife loosening significantly. They all just looked at each other for a moment.
"That was crazy right?" Hanna asked, "I mean there's nothing around for miles besides the prison a couple miles out and the side road" she further explained.
"Something about this doesn't feel right" Emily looked at Cece, the two had this weird ability to look at each other and know what the other was thinking.
"Ems right, I don't think we should stay here" Cece looked around at everyone.
"What do we do?" Alison piped in, "I'm not sure I feel comfortable staying the night after that" the others nodded.
"I think I saw a hotel, a couple miles back" Spencer added.
They each stood from where they were seated, bedsides Emily and Alison, who were already standing. They grabbed the things they had left in the cabin and loaded them into the car. They one by one got in and soon we're driving towards the entrance of the camp grounds.
The camp was built so that there was an entrance where you paid to rent the cabins and canoes but it wasn't closed off or anything. If anyone wanted to, they could walk in from the side road and get to where the cabins were.
"Leaving so soon?" The elderly lady who was surprisingly still at the front desk asked.
"Yeah, we have an emergency" Emily quickly came up with a lie.
"Such a shame" the lady spoke before opening the fence to get out. "Have a safe trip" she smiled. Emily thanked the lady once more before driving off.

So, this chapter was a little different but it plays into a better story, I hope! I've come up with a new idea so hopefully it comes out as good as I hope.
The next chapter will be the girls at the hotel.
Who was that man?
