a small collection of poetry that has it's own theme (and isn't just a bunch of mind ramblings). based on the prompt 'write a narrative from the point of view of someone/something that is not usually permitted to speak.'

written december 2020 (for a uni assignment, but i felt like i wanted to share it).

I. First Love

When you look at me, I tremble

And brush against the shore

I bear a glimpse of my soul to your ardent eyes

And leave you wanting more

You dip your toe in, testing me

You shiver at my touch

I urge you to dive into me

Anticipation that's too much.

When you wade into my waters

I'm dancing with excitement

I am afraid I'll drag you under

Don't you know that I'm a tyrant?

The sailors know firsthand

How I break the things I touch

They have tried to learn my secrets

I claimed those who knew too much.

But somehow you are different

Delving deeper into me

You have heard about my temper

Yet you seem to worship me.

You are unafraid; I am terrified

Can you love my fears away?

There is treasure deep inside of me

Are willing to make a trade?

My longing for you is all consuming

So come back to see me soon

I am enamoured by you endlessly

Ever flowing, ever blue.

II. Troubled Tides, Chaotic Currents

Can you handle my ever-changing moods?

The loving caress of my calm wave

to the anger that crashes ships and drowns heartbroken sailors?

Will what you find deep inside of me be worth it

If you even find it at all?

Maybe regardless of a prize you will stay.

Here with me, through every rush and sway.

Content with sea glass and broken shells

A sun kissed surface, iridescent spell

Content with the love that I offer you

Rather than the priceless jewels you are told lies untouched inside of me, guarded and sealed.

So can you love me at the same time as keeping me alive?

Is it possible? Could you try?

III. Siren's Lament.

You strip down bare as you have before,

my presence calming your inner storm.

You step in with a splash; eager for me to wash your anguish away.

Your tears sink into my body like slow, gentle rain

And yet inside every drop there is the pain of a hundred shipwrecks

Your battered heart the vessel beyond repair.

As you lean further into my wet embrace, I kiss your soft, wrinkled skin

And silently promise to love you

In all of your nakedness.

IV. Siren's Song

The Sirens sing into the night

A melodious, magical spell

Their voices carried by the wind

A man's personal hell.

The men think this is romance

Bewitched by beautiful women

But the Sirens have a vengeance

They see what lies within

Too many a time, men broke their hearts

And loving them was their sin

So they're smiling when the sailors

Decide to dive right in.

My body is their birthplace

And the Sirens know me well

I hide the bones of spellbound sailors

A secret we'll never tell.
