*Hi! This is sort of a background of what happened first year. You can skip to ch 2 if you would like, that's when it's normal time(I hope you like it, plz feel free to leave some constructive criticism)*

Since day one, Emery Yates has always just seen herself as any other girl. While she wasn't necessarily hideous, she was nowhere near remarkable in her perspective. She possessed big green eyes of a distinctive shade of emerald but they were always hidden behind a pair of chunky glasses. Not only did the glasses hide her eyes, but they did no justice for her gorgeous bone structure and hid her freckles that gently speckled at her nose and tops of her cheeks. Her mouth was pouty and of the prettiest shade of pink; unfortunately, her teeth off set from her beautiful features. Although in time, braces would solve the issue, her buck teeth became yet another reason why Emery found herself never being confident in her own skin.

Even though there is nothing wrong with being chubby, the disgusting expectations society put in young girls' head quickly made Emery self conscious at an early age.

Thankfully for Emery, she was always reminded of her inner and outer beauty by the people she loved the most in the world, Kevin and Tim. Her dads always reminded her that she was one of a kind and whenever she would protest, they would say that out of all the babies, she was the one they wanted and that should count for something.

Kevin and Tim, both being muggles, we're not on board initially when Emery had received her letter from Hogwarts but then came around to the idea when they were assured she would still do muggle school in the summertime.

Atlas when the summer had came to an end and when the time to attend Hogwarts came around, Emery's dads drove her to the train station. Even though they were running late, they couldn't help but listened to Rich Girl by Gwen Stefani and jam out like their lives depended on it.

Sadly, their fun came to an end right as they exited their car, feeling the stares of many parents and kids. Even though Emery was young and oblivious to the hate, Kevin and Tim could feel the daggers people were shooting their way, knowing the exact reason for it.

Kissing her parents goodbye, Emery dragged her trunk up to the train where she eventually found an empty compartment and wasted no time digging into one of her favorite books. She got lost in the story until she heard the compartment slide open and she saw a brown haired boy with green eyes walking over to her all flustered.

"Hi! I'm Harry Potter, first year", as he extended his hand for her to shake.

Emery took his hand and shook it firmly, returning his greeting with one of her own, "Emery Yates, first year". They seemed to have connected rather quickly and found themselves laughing at dumb jokes when they had heard the compartment doors slide open again.

Emery found herself then starting to greet a ginger then shortly followed by a brunette with exceptional mannerisms. The four quickly connected and seemingly conversed the whole train ride to Hogwarts.

Once everyone exited the train and made their way to the great hall, they all had lined up and were prepared to walk up to the sorting hat where they would find out which house they would be sorted into. Emery would be lying if she didn't say she was nervous, who wouldn't be. But as more and more people then became sorted and she gained some confidence, by the time it was her turn, she was sure that it would all be fine.

As the sorting hat gently hovered over her head, barely making contact with her hair, Emery heard the hat grumble out, "Emery Yates, definitely a courageous sole. . . Undeniably intelligent. . . Witty. . . Incredibly strong. . . Definitely special", the hat stopped talking for what felt like eternity for Emery before shouting, "Ravenclaw!"

As she heard cheering from the Ravenclaw table, she made her way over with a smile from ear to ear. She was quickly acquainted with everyone but almost immediately finding a real connection with a boy named Greyson Collins, another first year. For some reason she couldn't exactly explain, Emery could tell that she was going to be best friends with Greyson, she just knew it.

As time went on, Emery's instinct about Greyson was true and they quickly became two peas in a pod, undeniably best of friends. However, her first three friendships didn't work out as great. Emery found that since their connection on the train, the golden trio and herself hadn't spoken since. Of course Emery and Hermione would smile and wave in the halls, but there was never any real talk after that point.

While it was still a disappointment for Emery that nothing came out of their shared laughs and giggles on the train, she always did like to keep her circle small, even if that meant her circle only included herself and Greyson for the next four years.
