Young-Mi's POV
“I'm Young-Mi,” you replied and put your phone back in your pocket after you turned it off. “Who was it, if it isn't to indiscreet...”
“Oh, my ex-fiancee,” he casually replied. “We were supposed to get married next month, but life happens and before I knew she cheated on me with my best friend so yes... A nice wedding present I'd say.” His smile showed all the pain he seemed to go through, and somehow you understood.
“Well, I can understand how awful it is,” you murmured and he looked at you, curious. “My fiance kept being violent with me because I didn't answer his phone calls. He thought I cheated on him while I was at work and this... This today was too much.”
“Today?!” he exclaimed, surprised. “The man has some balls to call you right after that, especially if it wasn't his first time... People are very rude.”
“Oh yes, they are...”
“Anyway, I think you didn't deserve this man, Miss. You seem to be such a lovely person. It hurts me to hear that you were treated like this,” he admitted.
“Well, he was my first love,” you replied with regret. He was the first one you loved for such a long time and letting go felt like ripping off a part of yourself.
“I don't know if it will be of any comfort to you but she was my first love too,” he said and before you could say anything, he pursued, “I'm not trying to make it all about me, about how pitiful I am, and how you should cry over my terrible, terrible fate,” he said sarcastically, “but I just wanted to say that I can understand how painful to lose your first love.”
“Yeah, especially with all this myth surrounding love,” you added. “The first love that should be the one, and you believe in it, and whenever something goes wrong you think that it's just a phase when it isn't.”
“Personally, the worst is the fact that it's either you have to spend all your time together and everything will be fine, or God forbid when you are spending your time alone and everything else collapses!”
“Exactly,” you agreed vigorously. “It's crazy that you can't have a life on your own without worrying about what your partner might think...”
“Enough talking about our savage people from the past who clearly don't deserve our attention. Where are you going, Miss Young-Mi-ssi?” His voice became softer and his eyes were smiling and shining.
“Daegu, my hometown. My parents still don't know that I'm coming back. I hope they won't be too mad about me being back home...” It was what you dreaded the most.
“If anything goes wrong, you can always try to find me. I'll gladly help!” You looked slightly confused at him, due to his offer. “Oh, I'm going to Daegu too! To see my parents too, which is a big coincidence if you ask me...”
“This is indeed a big coincidence...” You remarked as you laid your head against the window.
Hearing his story was reassuring because you didn't feel so alone. Not because you saw that your story could have been worse but because he was comforting. Apparently, both of you were unlucky in love - you, on an abusive level, and him, on a cheating level. Both of you have had it rough and the wound was freshly cut. A few hours for you and only a day for him.
It was like meeting your own counterpart, a fate's trick that you were grateful for. But quickly, after having shared a few thoughts about your equally disturbed love lives, you changed the subject.
Both of you were interested in arts, and him especially in music. He was talking about the popular bands at the moment and their hit songs. It was refreshing to hear other's perspectives about arts. Not the usual complaints about it or how useless it was. But it was especially refreshing because he was so passionate about it.
His eyes were lit up when he vividly spoke about the music industry as you watched him in silence, enjoying this moment. He made you forget about it all, about why you were sitting in this train, why you were running away from Seoul, why you were hiding your face in the first place, and why your heart was aching so much right now.
Everything was soothed in the blink of an eye. You didn't even notice that Daegu was the next station and that it was where your paths would probably part forever.
