We never know where life will ultimately take us, not in the present moment. We meet strangers who become acquaintances, who become close friends. Family, too, may grow. In the same way, friends and family may become distant, maybe even leave.
Loss can hurt. The hurt may be from an unkind word or action, or from sudden departure. The hurt can make us sad, angry, or a mixture of the two, and that's natural. Having grace in these losses is hard, too, but worthwhile.
The same what we're on our own paths, so are our friends, coworkers, relatives, and even strangers. What a blessing it is to have met them, even if our paths merge for only a short time if they've brought us any joy (and hopefully we've brought them joy as well!).
Valuing others for the good they bring, even the differences, is never a wasted effort. We can always learn from each person, whether it be a new skill, an idea, or view. We are forever changed by knowing someone.
So what do we do with the void they may one day leave?
Maybe we mourn. Maybe for a short while. Silence can hard to bear. We will lovingly wish them well and hope to see them again. Once a friend, always a friend, of course. We may leave the light on for them. Their journey has moved them on and so too has ours.
Who knows what's around the corner. Grace will keep us moving.
